James V. Richards Obituary

James V. Richards, 96, of Blakely, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at Lackawanna Health Care and Rehab Center. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Corrine Evans Richards.

Jim was born in Blakely on June 8, 1924, to James and Anne Richards. He graduated from Blakely High School, where he pitched for Coach Johnnie Henzes' championship baseball team, 1941-1942.

Jim served his country in World War II, fighting with the 30th Division (Old Hickory) in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge at Stavelot, Belgium. He received the Purple Heart. Jim was a 76-year member of the American Legion.

Following his service, Jim received an associate degree from Lackawanna Business College. He worked at Capitol Records, Scranton, and Singer/Link, Kirkwood, N.Y.

Jim was a lifelong member of the Blakely Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher, deacon and trustee.

Jim was happiest being with his family and seeing people he knew. He was a dedicated grandfather who was always interested in his grandchildren's lives. In addition to his wife, Corrine, Jim is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Robert Crifasi, Marsha and Peter Paris, Amy and Rob Castner, and Melissa Casey; his grandchildren, Kevin Paris and wife, Sophia Checa; Kimberly Paris, Michael Casey; and Shannon Casey and fiancé, Matt Wells; great-grandson, Ellis Paris; brother-in-law, Floyd Evans; and several nieces.

Jim was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard Richards and wife, Ruth; and his sisters and brother-in-law, Mabel Richards, and Agnes and Robert Whiting.

Jim's family would like to thank the staff at Lackawanna Health Care and Rehab Center, especially those on B-1, for the care and compassion shown to Jim while he was a resident.

Interment and services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Robert E. Decker Funeral Home, 702 River Street, Peckville, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to the Valley Community Library, 739 River St., Peckville.
