Michelle A. Morcom Obituary

Michelle A. Morcom, 56, of Jermyn, died Saturday, Feb. 20, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.

Michelle was born in Carbondale, Pa., on July 10, 1964, a daughter of Shirley (Iyoob) Morcom, of Jermyn, Pa., and the late Robert A. Morcom.

She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Parish, Jermyn, PA 18433. She was a graduate of Lakeland High School, class of 1982. Michelle was proud to be a Lakeland Chief. Michelle was an extremely talented athlete. She was very competitive and enjoyed any sport, especially basketball and softball. Michelle excelled at these sports during high school and continued to play at the collegiate level. After earning her teaching degree from East Stroudsburg University, Michelle returned to her alma mater and spent nearly 30 years teaching at Lakeland. The majority of her years were spent within the classroom walls of Mayfield Elementary. It was important to Michelle to invest in the Lakeland community. She continued her passion for athletics by coaching softball and basketball at Lakeland High School. Michelle passed her love for sports down to her daughter, Tara, whom she coached her entire life. Michelle made a huge impression on virtually every student that set foot in her classroom, every player that she coached, and also on her colleagues, over the many years that she spent at Lakeland.

Outside of the classroom, Michelle was a loving daughter, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved her dogs, Koda and Loki, whom she called "the boys." She enjoyed spending time with her family and got so much joy out of being a great-aunt to Tate and Reid. Michelle would escape to her "happy place" at Secluded Acres, where she spent hours laughing and making memories with her loving partner John and their camper family. Michelle will be remembered for her sense of humor, wit, infectious smile, hearty laugh and big heart. She will be greatly missed by all.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Hospice of the Sacred heart, Lehigh Valley Health Network, and Dr. Nair and his staff, Dr. Peters and NROC, Hematology and Oncology, Dunmore, and Dr. J. Bannon for the loving care they gave Michelle during her battle with cancer.

Michelle is survived by longtime partner, John Heid, Archbald; daughter, Tara Morcom, Jermyn; two sisters, Lourie Hughes and husband, Gary, Jermyn; and Leslie Raciborski, Jermyn; a brother, Robert Morcom and wife, Debbie, Archbald.

She is also survived by niece, Ashley Anderson and husband, David, and their children, Tate and Reid; nephew, Bryant Hughes; niece, Alyssa Raciborski; niece, Amber Loomis; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul and Alan Morcom.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 25, at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Parish, Madison Avenue, Jermyn, by the Rev. John Ruth, pastor, at 10 a.m. Friends attending Mass are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be in Jermyn Cemetery.

Viewing will be held 4 to 7 on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Harrison Funeral Home, 374 N. Main St., Archbald, Pa. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and masks will be required to be worn at all times.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
