Dr. William Joseph Dinnen 1923 - 2013 William J. "Bill" Dinnen, 90, was born at home in Detroit, Michigan, on June 9, 1923. Bill passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann (Bauerbach) Dinnen; daughter Jane Dinnen of Traverse City MI, daughter Kate Dinnen Chambers of Denver CO, daughter Julie Kies and son-in-law Dr. Randall Kies of Austin TX; grandchildren Andy (Heather) Wares, Sara (Marcos) Gabriel, Mike Wares (Lori Mace), Joel, Emily and William Chambers, and David and Katie Kies; great-grandchildren Will and Sadie Wares, Ava and Nico Gabriel, and Oliver, Amelia and Evelyn Wares; and his extended and beloved Lake Family. Bill was preceded in death by his father, William J. Dinnen Sr., and mother Louise Jacobs Dinnen. Bill attended Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1943 and from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1946. He married Ann in 1949 in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame. After medical school, Bill served in the US Navy during the Korean War on a USN hospital ship out of Bremerton, Washington. He did his internship and residency at Grace Hospital in Detroit, and moved to Port Huron, Michigan where he practiced internal medicine until he retired in 1988. During that time Bill was an active member of the medical staff and served as chief of staff at Port Huron Hospital and Mercy Hospital. He served on the boards of the St. Clair County United Way, Port Huron Catholic Social Services, Mercy Hospital, and the Black River Country Club. Bill loved planning events and trips with his many 'families', including outings with his potluck group; annual gatherings for the 'lake family'; sharing worship with his Newman Center friends; fishing and cabin weekends with fellow outdoorsmen; and sporting events with his grandchildren. For the last few years Bill has been in the loving care of the staff at Orchard Creek Supportive Care in Traverse City. Their professionalism, dedication, and kindness has been deeply appreciated by his family. Bill was highly respected and admired by his peers and patients; loved and honored by his family and friends. He had a long and prosperous life that touched and enhanced so many others. He will be missed. The family will receive friends at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Saturday September 14, 2013 at 12:00 Noon with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 P.M.
