Fort Gratiot - Mary Jane Hayes, age 92, of Fort Gratiot and formerly of Marysville died July 9, 2018 at Lakeshore Woods Assisted Living. She was born March 25, 1926 in Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada to Daniel and Mary MacKinnon. She married James J. Hayes on April 25, 1953 in Ferndale, Michigan. She lived in the Blue Water area for much of her life. Mary Jane was a graduate of St. Martha's School of Nursing in Nova Scotia, and worked as a nurse in many different health care settings over the years in Port Huron and the Detroit area. After retirement, she volunteered as a nurse with the People's Clinic and the VNA. In addition to her work, she also enjoyed traveling, golf, music, gardening, and bowling. Mary Jane was a member of Holy Trinity Parish.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James J. Hayes, 2 daughters, Pattie (Jim Bloch) Hayes, and Anne (Dan) Falk, 6 grandchildren, Nathan (Laura) McDonell, Peter (Margaret) McDonell, Erin (Dave) Vogel, Kate (Kevin) Hoffman, Daniel Falk, and Juliana Falk, 7 great-grandchildren, 3 siblings, Joseph (Pauline) MacKinnon, Margaret MacKinnon, Msgr. Ambrose MacKinnon S.F.M., and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, John, Rita, Theresa, and Alexander.

A funeral mass will take place at 11AM on July 28th at Holy Trinity Parish's St. Stephen worship site with her brother, Msgr. Ambrose MacKinnon officiating. Friends may visit with the family at church beginning at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Blue Water Hospice or the People's Clinic. The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Lakeshore Woods Assisted Living (formerly Barss Residential). Smith Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
