Sister André Cuccia

Sister André Cuccia

Sister André Cuccia, CCVI, a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, Texas passed away on October 3, 2012 at Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas. May she enjoy God's presence, the One she loved and served so faithfully.

Sister André was born in Port Arthur, Texas to Sam and Lena Mondello Cuccia and given the name Lucille. She was the youngest girl in an Italian American family. Lucille entered the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in September 1953 at Villa de Matel and was given the name Sister Andre. She made Perpetual Profession of Vows on August 15, 1961.

Sister André was board certified in Texas and Louisiana as a registered nurse and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Sacred Heart Dominican College in Houston. With these qualifications, she gave excellent patient care as a nursing supervisor at many health care facilities of the Congregation. Sr. Andre began her Ministry at St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, as a nursing supervisor and continued in this capacity at St. Patrick Hospital, Lake Charles; Schumpert Hospital, Shreveport; St. Mary's Hospital, Galveston, Texas; and St. Edward Hospital, Cameron, Texas. Sr. André served as a staff nurse in the emergency room at St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Alexandria, where she cared for many trauma patients. Sister's role then became one of convent superior and vocation ministry at St. Mary Hospital, Port Arthur, Texas. Sister André also served as a patient representative at St. Joseph Hospital, Houston and St. Michael Health Care Center in Texarkana, Texas. Her compassionate, benevolent nature, as well as her relational qualities, was just as much appreciated by her patients as was her nursing expertise. Over the years, she continued to hone her nursing and pastoral skills by participating in workshops and programs that gave her additional insights into ethical concerns and the care she gave to others.

Sister André was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jasper and Joseph Cuccia and sister Josie Ross. She is survived by sisters Mary Tompkins and Angie Savarino and husband Sam; brothers Anthony Cuccia, Frank Cuccia and wife Mary, Nick Cuccia and wife Judy, who are all living in Texas; and by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews.

We extend a special thanks to the Sisters and staff at St. Placidus Community for their gentle and loving care during Sister Andre's later years.

Sister André's body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa De Matel, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas at 5:00 PM on October 5, 2012, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 10:30 AM, on October 6, 2012. The Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
