Bille Jean Duplissey Malone

Alexandria - Billie Jean Duplissey Malone left this earth January 5, 2021, at the age of 88. Born in 1932 to Richard and Mattie Duplissey, Billie Jean grew up in Lecompte, La., as the youngest in a family of nine children and continued to live in the Lecompte area until the late 1980s, when she moved to Alexandria, La.

To say Billie lived life fully would be an understatement. She raised five children, loved to travel, loved to garden, cook and sew, was active in her church and sang in the church choir throughout most of her life. After moving to Alexandria, she also did volunteer work with the Shepherd Center and CASA and was a member of the Joy Makers, a group that visited area nursing homes and assisted living facilities weekly to sing for residents.

When her youngest child reached kindergarten, she joined the workforce as a teacher's aide at Rapides High School in Lecompte in its beginning years and later became the school's secretary. She ended her working days in an office administrative position at the Rapides Parish School Board Curriculum Center in Alexandria. During her Lecompte years, Billie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lecompte, and upon moving to Alexandria, joined the First United Methodist Church of Alexandria.

Her greatest love, and perhaps her greatest achievement if you asked her, were her grandchildren. Many of them have fond memories of trips and other fun activities they enjoyed with their grandmother.

Billie is preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Dr. Wayne Malone; a son, Bill Lyles; a grandson, Kipp Gullett; three brothers- Bill, Percy and Carl Duplissey; four sisters - Inez Hearn, Dimple Dalton, Kayo Grayson and Ruth Willis; and former husband and father of her children, John E. Lyles.

She is survived by her daughter, Georgiann Gullett (Pete) of Alexandria; three sons, John W. Lyles (Margaret) of Springfield, La.; Chris Lyles (Barbara) of Alexandria; and Lew Lyles (Anja) of West Monroe, La.; daughter-in-law Jane (Bill's wife) of Thibodaux; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one sister, Joy Young of Bridge City, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family thanks everyone who helped take care of her in her final years - the staff of Brookdale Senior Living in Alexandria and her aides and nurse from Compassionate Care Hospice. You all gave her a reason to continue to laugh and joke a little even when declining mental and physical capabilities made it necessary for her to spend her remaining days in her beloved recliner.

The family requests memorials be made in Billie's memory to First United Methodist Church, 2727 Jackson St., Alexandria, LA 71301.
