Howard Gates, Sr.

Alexandria - A memorial service celebrating the life of Howard Gates, Sr. will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 13, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. B. David Brooks officiating. Visitation will be held at the church following the service.

Howard Gates, Sr., 97, of Alexandria, was born August 17, 1921, and departed this life on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at Regency House, Alexandria.

Mr. Gates served our country in the United States Army Air Corps, as a combat pilot on a B-26 Marauder, during World War II. Following his military career he taught printing and owned several print shops. "Dru Dru" as he was known to his family, was an active member and ordained deacon of Calvary Baptist Church and the "In the Word" Bible class.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Julia Collier Gates; parents, James and Agnes Carter Gates; brother, James Herbert Gates and sister, Doris Elaine Gates Flynn Jonson Flournoy.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Howard Gates, Jr. (Janelle) and James Watson Gates (Christina Frazer); grandchildren, Stephanie Gates Puckett (Raymond) and Matthew Louis Gates (Jennifer); great grandchildren, Jackson Gates Puckett, Tucker Louis Gates and Noah Michael Gates and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Services are under the direction of Hixson Brothers of Alexandria.
