Leon Blalock, Sr.

Funeral services for Leon Blalock, Sr. will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2013 in the chapel of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Koonce officiating. Interment will follow in Alexandria Memorial Gardens, Woodworth.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2013 and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Leon Blalock, Sr., 94, a lifelong resident of Alexandria passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Alexandria VA Medical Center.

Leon is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Corinne Elizabeth Harper Blalock; his parents Jim and Essie Stewart Blalock; his sisters: Maude Jones, Frances McCain, and Elizabeth Blalock; and his brothers: Jim Blalock Jr., Jack Blalock and Charles Blalock.

Leon Blalock, Sr., attended Bolton High School where he ran track and won State title in the 220 yard low hurdles with this he was awarded a full track scholarship to Northwestern State University. While attending Northwestern he met his wife Corinne E. Harper, shortly after he enlisted in the National Guard in 1938. Leon was a Master Sergeant in the Army's 31st Division of the 156th Infantry (Dixie Division), a WWII veteran and went on shore at Omaha Beach, as part of the invasion of Normandy. Upon his return home he went to work with the Alexandria Police Department and retired as a detective after 20 years of service. Leon was an active member of Homewood Baptist Church. He also enjoyed many years of retirement hunting and fishing and working as a nuisance alligator hunter for the Louisiana State Wildlife and Fisheries.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sons: Leon Blalock, Jr. and his wife Lynne of Alexandria; Abby G. Blalock, Sr. and his wife Susan of Alexandria; his five grandchildren: Jeanne Haupt, Charlene Kessler (Shane), Leon "Lee" Blalock III (Melissa), Abby Blalock, Jr. and Jennifer Coker; his four great-grandchildren: Shelby Corley, PFC Brenden Kessler, Alissa Coker and Austin Coker; and one sister Essie Marie Smith.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Homewood Baptist Church at 3111 Rapides Ave, Alexandria, LA 71301 or to the Disabled American Veterans @ Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

The Blalock Family would like to give sincere appreciation to the employees of the Alexandria Veterans Medical Center for all of their care and attention during Mr. Leon's illness.
