Eric H. Niedmann

1938 - 2021

Eric H. Niedmann, 82, longtime Westerly resident, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2021. He was the husband of Paula (Downes) Niedmann, who passed away February 8, 2021. Born in New York City on May 31, 1938, son of the late Eric and Frida Niedmann, he resided in Westerly since 1961. Mr. Niedmann attended New York Military Academy and was a graduate of Fitch High School, Groton, Connecticut. He held Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Business Administration from Bryant College. Eric married Paula Downes in 1959. Their son, Peter, was born in 1960; Paul in 1964. Eric was known for his kind spirit, direct and honest personality, and quick humor. He enjoyed the beach, both for its natural beauty and the chance to socialize. He was a Chief in the Engineering Department at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton. He worked there for 35 years until his retirement in 1993. Mr. Niedmann served as President of the Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce from 1975-1976. He was a member of the National Management Association, Society of Technical Writers and Publishers, Association of MBA Executives, Westerly Lion's Club, and the Westerly Hospital Volunteers. He served as a Vestryman and Junior Warden of Christ Church, Westerly, where he was a longtime member. Eric will be forever missed and fondly remembered by his two sons, Peter Niedmann and wife Kathleen, of West Hartford, Connecticut, and Paul Niedmann of Pawcatuck, Connecticut; brother-in-law Peter Downes of Chepachet, Rhode Island; adored grandchildren, Alex Niedmann and wife Laura McDevitt, Will Niedmann, Veronica Niedmann, Bridget McGrath, Brendan McGrath; nieces Alane Downes, Hilary Downes Fortune, Jennifer Jeremiah, Jessica Jeremiah, Julie Haskell, and their families. He will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Paula, in the Christ Church Memorial Garden in a private service. A service of remembrance will be held at Christ Church when it is safe to do so.
