Vernon "Cubby" Anderson

1925 - 2020

Vernon R. Anderson, "Cubby", 95, died November 22, 2020 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND while recovering from an illness.
A private mass will be celebrated for family only, to comply with COVID 19 regulations, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 28, 2020, the Rosary will be prayed beginning at 10:30. The Rosary and mass will be live streamed and archived on his tribute page with the obituary at www.lerudschuldt.com. There will be visitation for the public from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, November 27 at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home Chapel, Valley City.
Vernon was born June 12, 1925 To Victor and Alma (Moen) Anderson at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, ND.
Cubby grew up on farms near Eckleson and Leal, N.D. After graduating from Leal High School he joined the United States Navy and served until the end of WWII. He attended Ambrose College in Iowa and Notre Dame University in Indiana. After serving he returned to the family farm south of Leal where he farmed with his parents.
Vernon married Hilda Eberle Oct. 22, 1955 at St Mary's Church near Dazey. He and Hilda first lived in Valley City and then moved to Leal and continued to farm.
Cubby was on the board of Barnes County Rural Water and loved to travel to the state and national Rural Water conventions to meet with people from across the USA and exchange ideas on improving our rural water systems. He was also a member of the American Legion, Elks and Eagles. He was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Wimbledon, ND and later St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Valley City.
Cubby really enjoyed working with wood. He did finish work on several houses in the area, as well as built cabinets and furniture. He especially loved working on items for the church and crucifixes for students' Confirmation at St Boniface. He belonged to the woodworking and carvers club in Valley City and rented a shop with several members of the club. He created many smaller pieces for sale and gifts including intricate bowls on his lathe, expanding trivets and realistic and whimsical carvings of animals, people and holiday decorations.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Alma Anderson, his son, Kent Anderson, and his brother, Clarence Anderson.
He is survived by his wife Hilda, his son Dan (Anne) Anderson, his daughter Gail Anderson and his grandchildren Jon Anderson, Mike Anderson and Taylor Sorensen.
Cubby loved life and faced it all with a smile and a story. He was loved by many and will be missed.
Lerud Mathias Funeral Home in Valley City is assisting Cubby's family with arrangements.
