Stewart Moskowitz Obituary

STEWART MOSKOWITZ Stewart Moskowitz, internationally known artist, died May 23, 2017, at his home in Redway, California. He was born in 1941 with a drive to create art which never left him. With his exquisite sense of design he worked day-and night-in his studio exploring the possibilities of acrylic on canvas. He produced a vast and far-ranging body of work that reflected his deep and profound sense of humor. Stewart's charismatic personality engendered loyalty; he radiated warmth and love wherever he went. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Stewart's first influences came from his father, a house painter and wood sculptor who carved intricate dioramas. In the late 1950s, when Stewart lived at the Chelsea Hotel, he would go out at night to soak in jazz played by luminaries like Billie Holiday. He attended Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of New York. In Los Angeles the 1960's, Stewart studied at Art Center, and went on to receive his Masters of Fine Arts Degree from Otis Art Institute. His master's thesis, entitled "Animals in a Children's World," expanded on his approach of creating art with the simplicity and curiosity of a child, coupled with the knowledge of an adult. In San Francisco, in the late 1960's, Stewart was part of the ferment in the Haight-Ashbury. In 1976, Stewart married Lelia Frimkess in the Venice, California, studio of her father, ceramicist Michael Frimkess. They raised their four children in Topanga Canyon, where they lived for 26 years before moving to the North Coast of California in 2002. During the heyday of the poster market millions of Stewart's images of whimsical animal characters were sold. Stewart's art was especially popular in Japan in the 1980s, where he traveled regularly for decades and was celebrated in museum and gallery shows. His work has been used to represent Fuji Film, Mitsubishi, Sakura Bank, Japan Airlines, Suntory, and more. Simon and Schuster published four children's books Stewart wrote for his characters. After moving to the North Coast, as he expanded his array of subjects and statements, his art began to be influenced by politics and the local pot culture, as well as the stunning landscapes of the area. Stewart is survived by his wife Lelia, their children Tia, Myla, Sachi and Louie, and grandchildren Kayvan and Layla. There will be an event to honor Stewart on July 8, at 11 a.m., hosted by Peter Connelly in Southern Humboldt, California. Peter's address is: 10 Kadin Way, Garberville. I loved visiting Stewart and Lelia in Topanga Canyon. Both filled my heart with joy. The last time I saw them was when Tia and Myla were babies. My son Ted was 2 years old. I was so proud to be able to display Stewart's artwork in Venice at the Security Pacific Bank. I still admire his work in my apartment. I have a canvas painting of sea horses and a loving gift to for Ted "Choo Choo Train. My second son Josh did not get the opportunity to meet him not did I get to meet Sachi and Louie. Named after the great Louie Sachmo Armstrong. Moskowits family, I am so blessed by God for the love my family was given by your family.

I have spent hours looking at The Corporation, never knowing its title until 33 years later A framed poster hung in my kids' shared bedroom for many years. I always loved the penguin's expressions; they always made me smile. I often attributed silly stories to each character's personality. Thank you for providing for me many hours of enjoyment while I nursed and rocked my little children to sleep on so many occasions. I still have it. Thank you for your wonderful, carefree spirit.

I only knew Stuart thru his colorful paintings all around SoHum. They made me and others smile. His paintings were Hugh and made a statement of how beautiful our area is and how it's so important to protect our Giant Coastal Redwoods forever, He will be missed but not Forgotton. May he Rest In Peace knowing his Paintingss were enjoyed by many!

In the early 80s I went to a studio in Santa Monica with some friends. Just out of the Air Force maybe 22 years old and I'm admiring a painting someone walked up behind me and asked what I liked about the painting. I said my Mom would love this. He said buy it for her I told him I was unemployed. He gave me a discount and payments. I paid him off early and Mom enjoyed it for decades. Everyone that comes into my living room comments on it. I've been loving it for 33 yrs.

The first time I met Stewart,he came into my office with the same smile that is captured in this picture. He looked as if he just left the easel but was happy to be around others. Every time afterwards, Stewart was the same, happy to see me and happy in his skin. He seemed like a very unique individual and I wish that our paths had merged more.

May Stewart's friends and family find peace
within so that they can help each other
through this difficult time.

Even though I didn't know him personally his talent with painting captured many in SoHum and beyond. I loved his painting up at the Meadows in Redway. May his soul Rest In Peace knowing he inspired many and that he left knowing his life made a difference here,
