Wilson Grissom Obituary

WILSON BOYD GRISSOM May 31, 1929 - August 18, 2018 Wilson Boyd Grissom passed away on August 18, 2018, at Willow Springs Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Redding, CA. Wilson and his identical twin brother, Winfred, were born on May 31, 1929, in Searcy, Arkansas to W.B. and Eva Mae Grissom. He lived with his family in Searcy until 1949 when they moved to Eureka, California. It was there that he met his life-long sweetheart, Helen Louise Becker. Wilson & Helen married on July 15, 1951, and Wilson left soon after to serve in the Korean Conflict. While in Korea he contracted hemorrhagic fever. He was medically discharged and returned to the States in the fall of 1952. Wilson recovered completely and he and Helen started their life together. Wilson began working for Humboldt Plywood in Arcata which later became Simpson Mad River Plywood. The couple lived first in Eureka, CA, and then settled in Fieldbrook, CA in a home Wilson built for his family. During their years in Fieldbrook, Wilson served on the school board for Fieldbrook School, on the board of the water department, and as a volunteer fireman with the Fieldbrook Fire Department. He was instrumental in upgrading each of these services. Helen & Wilson lived in Fieldbrook until 1981, when Wilson was transferred to Shelton, WA. After working in the plywood industry for 43 years, Wilson retired from Simpson Timber in 1994. He and Helen relocated to Redding, CA., where he was finally able to indulge in his two favorite pastimes: fishing and the study of the Civil War. Wilson was predeceased by his wife, Helen; his sisters Joann Crook and Mary Beth Spalding; and his son-in-law, John Hendricks. He is survived by his brother, Winfred Grissom of Eureka; and his children, Alan Grissom and wife Paula of Redding; Pamela Grissom and husband Gary Smith, also of Redding; Rachel Hendricks of Atlanta, GA; and Richard Grissom and wife Michelle of Fieldbrook. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on September 16, 2018 at 1PM at McDonalds Chapel located at 1275 Continental Drive in Redding. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association/Willow Springs Alzheimer's Care Center or your favorite charity. During the years 1966-69, I had the opportunity of being the principal
of Fieldbrook School. At the time, Wilson was on the school board. He was a well respected member of the community and I was privileged
In working with him. He and Helen also raised a wonderful family.

Seeing this picture of Wilson made me smile, what a handsome guy. I reflect back to all the great memories our families shared together. Wilson always greeted me with that warm smile, big hug, and a presence that always made me feel supported with unconditional love. Thank You Wilson (and Helen) for being my "Washington" Grandparents.
