I had a Sage Thrasher in my yard last week.
The thought that Barry might have sent' it
(the 1st rare songbird I've seen there) pleased me as I remembered his time among us. Best wishes to all who recall,
especially Eileen

I found this sadly too late to reconnect. I grew up in Levittown with Barry as a classmate at the Disney school. He was always a great ball player and I recall hunting frogs and turtles with him when we were in grade school. His mother introduced me to Scrapple, which I still eat today and always recall with fondness knowing him.

I often birded with Barry back when he lived in Vancouver, British Columbia. I remember a particular Pelagic birding trip out of Westport, Washington that was really great, as well as several wonderful trips to Manning Provincial Park. There was one over night camping trip at Manning that was interrupted by a black bear and we spent the night sleeping in his Scout, instead of the tent! And the trip to Ocean Shores, Washington - chasing a rare Rustic Bunting over black ice covered roads and having the thrill of riding in a spinning car down the I-5 freeway! No damage to the car or passengers - and we were fortunate to see the incredible rare Bunting at the end the day. My most memorable birding experience with Barry was being present at the Iona Ponds when Barry found and identified the first record of a Spoon Billed Sandpiper for Canada. What a find that was for everyone present and for the many birders who travelled from all over Canada and the United States to see the bird. That will always be one of my most treasured memories, for sure. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to share Barry's immense knowledge while birding together. He will be missed.
To all of Barry's family and friends, my deepest condolences.....

I'm saddened to hear of Barry's passing. I worked with him at Barbara's Fish Trap during his time in Princeton By The Sea. He taught me soooo much about birding.

Although only an occasional visitor to Half Moon in the 1980s, I had the life-changing pleasure of birding with Barry Sauppe a couple of unforgettable times. He showed me my first Fulmar, and many other birds off Pigeon Point; and he instructed me on how to cook Brussel Sprouts as well. It is diminished world for me this morning, hearing of his death. My best wishes to his family and friends in their time of mourning.

Barry was a legendary force & talent in San Mateo birding circles for so many years. His ability to discern pelagic species at great distances is likely to remain unsurpassed. He took under his wing some (then) young birders like Peter Metropulos & Ron Thorn, who in their own right have
attained great status among our community. I'll miss his great stories & humor & his unique perspective on many a subject. I talked with him before Xmas on the phone & we had a great conversation that was very useful to me in tracking down some historical details that related to Crystal Springs CBC & Filoli Estate that helped maintain our access there for the count!
Thanks Barry! Fly in peace!

PS there likely will be more memorializing of Barry on the Sequoia Audubon website/newsletter in days to come AND heartfelt condolences to Eileen & all his family.

Dear Eileen and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Barry was a force of nature, an amazing seabirder, a good friend, and one of the "originals" in so many ways. I shall think o him the next time I'm out on Monterey Bay watching albatrosses soar. With sympathy,

To Eileen and Barry's family, I am so sorry for your loss. Barry was a force for birding. He was an incredible birder and left his mark on the world. He was always kind to me. He will be missed by so many. I shall think of him the next time I'm out on Monterey Bay-- looking at all the seabirds he loved so much. With sympathy,
