Francis "Bud" Hastings Obituary
FRANCIS BUD HASTINGS Francis "Bud" Hastings born to Henry Charles Hastings and Florence Sturdevant Hastings on September 24, 1933 and passed away on June 3rd 2018 at the age of 84 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers. Bud was a Navy Veteran serving his country aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown, from 1952 to 1956. He was proud of his service and enjoyed wearing his Navy hat around town. Wherever he went people would thank him and shake his hand. He especially enjoyed identifying with fellow veterans and sharing stories with them. After his service, while still uniform, Bud went to the PG&E office and applied for a job where he worked as a truck driver and patrolman his entire career. One of his spare duties was making coffee for the 'guys' which he enjoyed doing. Not long after finding employment, Bud met the love of his life Shirley Mae Ward and married her on her birthday in 1957. Bud and Shirley resided in Eureka, CA for most of their years together and had a son and daughter, Raymond and Shelly. Much of their time was spent fishing, hunting and camping in the great outdoors creating many special memories and leaving lasting impressions on their children. Bud loved country music. He and Shirley were members of the Elks Club where they attended activities and would often get together with friends Fred and Jan Sundquist and dance the night away. After retirement Bud and Shirley moved to Montana and spent 9 years hunting mule deer, antelope and elk and frequented many barn auctions. They found much joy together in their lives and loved to laugh and have a good time with friends and family. When medical issues arose, they decided to move back to the coast to be near their son Raymond and daughter-in-law Doreen, who devoted themselves to his care. He spent the last 5 years of his life living at home with his caring wife, son and daughter-in-law- whom he shared much love and laughter. Bud would often say" You need to find something everyday to laugh at," and he did. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Bob, Chuck, Ed and Jim. He would recall fondly that he was nicknamed Bud because he was the last born of the boys and while his parents hoped for a girl, he was the 'Flower that never blossomed.' He leaves behind his wife Shirley, son Raymond Hastings (Doreen Hastings) and daughter Shelly Roberts. He had 4 grandchildren: Jesse Hastings, Austin Hastings, Jessica Roberts and Chaunte Fischer. He also leaves two great grandchildren, Ethan Hastings and Angelica Poe. Our family would like to extend a special thank you to caretaker Rosanna Bruhnke , Adult Day Services, VA Home Based Primary Care and Hospice for helping to bring comfort and support to him and family. As requested, no services will be held. Close family members will gather together and have a BBQ. Bud will be greatly missed by all who loved him, especially his wife, and we will always remember and treasure our time with him. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com
