James Robert Crossland (Jim) was born March 20, 1948 in Santa Monica, California. Jim passed from this earth March 17, 2013 in Eureka, California, after a long illness. He was the third son of Marybel Poer Crossland and Robert Firth Crossland, both now deceased. Jim served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968. While in the service he served on the aircraft carrier the USS Hornet and assisted in the retrieval of the Apollo II space capsule in July 1969. He also served on the floating communications station the USS Annapolis. After an honorable discharge he went back to school and earned a degree in forestry from the University of California, San Luis Obispo. He worked for the Forest Service until 1999 when he retired in the Eureka area after 30 years of service. Jim was an avid hunter, sportsman and did competition skeet shooting. He cared greatly about nature, country and family. He loved his garden, fruit trees and horses. Jim will be missed by all the family and friends. Jim and Sharon Newstrom were married March 25, 2000 in Eureka. Jim is survived by his wife Sharon and her children, Sherri Gerfen and Shawn Schlegel; grandchildren Cody and Justin Gerfen and Sierra Schlegel; his two older brothers Ronald Kent Crossland and wife Silvia of Kerrville, TX and Stephen Keith Crossland and wife Jean of Santa Barbara; one sister Jo Ann Alvarez and husband Alex of Maricopa, Arizona; his mother-in-law Jeannie Newstrom and by numerous nieces and nephews. Thank you to the VA and to Jim's caregivers, Joseph, Benjamin and Rosemary and to Hospice of Humboldt for all their care and kindness. Visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street, Eureka on Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. Funeral service will be at Bethel Church, 2734 Hubbard Lane, Eureka on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Ocean View Cemetery.
