SPEIER EDWIN Obituary
Edwin R. (Ted) Speier Dec. 15, 1919 - Nov. 26, 2018 Ted was born Edwin Roger Speier in Samoa, California, on Dec. 15, 1919 & passed away peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 26, 2018 in the cabin he built by the ocean, with his wife of 75 years by his side, & was just 2 weeks short of celebrating his 99th birthday. He was baptized in the old First Congregational Church of Eureka where he later became a member & sang in the choir for many years. He also sang with the Eureka Barbershop Quartet. He attended local schools & graduated from Eureka High School after lettering in Football, Basketball, & Baseball & went on to Humboldt State College majoring in Physical Education & competing in those three sports. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 after 3 years of college & fought in WWII in Germany & was still there just before the war ended in 1945. He met the love of his life, Junie Balsiger, in 1943 while he was on leave from the Army. They met in front of the Brown Derby in Los Angeles on Easter Eve & attended the Easter Sunrise Service at the Hollywood Bowl & were married about a year later in 1944. They lived in Los Angeles for a year after having their first daughter, Teddie in 1947 & then moved to Eureka, California where they had two more children, Spencer in 1950 & Shannon in 1957 & raised their family in Humboldt County. Ted started working in local lumber mills & then became a foreman at Arcata Redwood Lumber Company for 28 years until he retired. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, work crossword puzzles, & play cards. He spent many years at Big Lagoon, starting with time at his Mother's cabin in the 1930's & later with his family & Grandchildren in the cabin he built onto. He enjoyed salmon fishing & always knew where to drop the line & come up with the largest fish. He played golf into his early nineties. Ted was preceded in death by his parents George John (Ted) Speier & Edna Mae Rogers Speier Richardson; his siblings Lynwood Speier, Mary Emily Dick, & Claire Seidell. He is survived by his wife Junie Speier, his children Teddie Bell & husband Ken of Spokane, Washington; Spencer Speier of Midway, Utah; Shannon Speier of Hawi, Hawaii; his grandchildren Makani Speier-Brito & Brisa Speier-Brito; & several nieces & nephews.
