1951 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
PASTOR THOMAS K. SLATER Heaven welcomed Pastor Thomas K. Slater home to rest in the loving arms of Jesus on May 31, 2018. Pastor Tom was born on November 21, 1951 to Lynn Jr. and Helen Ada Slater in Detroit Michigan. Having been born in "Motown" he enjoyed a great love of music all of his life. He decided to attend college and become an engineer. Following the tragic death of a close friend he was consoled by his church pastor. It was this minister that suggested Tom change his career path and become a pastor. Tom accepted this calling and attended Concordia College Ann Arbor, MI and received a BA in 1983. He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne IN with a masters of Divinity in 1987. He was called to Eureka, CA and ordained December 6, 1987 at Trinity Lutheran Church. He served in Eureka until 1992. In October 1992 he began serving Hope Lutheran Church in Fortuna, CA. He also served as interim Pastor at St. Marks Lutheran church in Ferndale, CA. He retired November 21, 2016. Tom married his soulmate, Donna, on September 10, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson Kurt Fauth. He is survived by his sisters Sharon (Jim) Boyer and Julie Russell, Brothers Bruce and Douglas Slater, wife Donna and step children Judy Miller and Julie Conroy, step grandchildren Michael Conroy and Krystle Conroy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family living in Michigan. Pastor Tom was a gentle, kind loving man who truly and tenderly enjoyed sharing his days spiritually with everyone. His greatest joy was sharing the good news found in the bible - the gift, not earned by good deeds, but freely given by our Heavenly Father - eternal life by simply believing. A memorial service will be given June 16 at 1:00pm, at St. Marks Lutheran Church, Ferndale, CA. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com
