Aug. 25, 1934 - Jan. 23, 2012 Gerald Lee Thomas "Jerry", long time resident of Humboldt County passed away on Jan. 23, 2012 at Pacific Care in Eureka, Ca. at the age of 77. Jerry was born in Paso Robles, Ca. on August 25, 1934 to Mabel Mae Thomas and Lloyd C. Thomas. He is survived by his wife Frances (Felt) Thomas of McKinleyville, a daughter Cynthia Marie (Thomas) Clifton, and grandson Anthony Lee Clifton of Alexandria, La., sisters Shirley Arruda of Eureka, Ca., and Pat Danielson of Woodland Park, Co., a brother Bob Thomas of North Dakota as well as many nieces, nephews, close family and friends. He is predeceased by his mother Mabel Hollen, father Lloyd Thomas and a brother Tommy Thomas. Jerry graduated from Arcata Union High School in 1952 winning the Bank of America award for mathematics. He also worked many hours for the Purity store in Arcata, Ca. After graduation he joined the Navy for 3 years of service. After leaving the Navy in 1955, he went on to attend Humboldt State College where he met his wife of 56 years. While in the Navy he specialized in electronics, winning many awards. One such group was referred to as the "Einstein's of the Navy". He went on to use this knowledge in his chosen career. He worked for Douglas Aircraft Company on the Thor Missile installations in England, for Interstate Electronics Corporation on the Polaris Submarine systems, and finally for Hughes Aircraft on SURTASS. His work in engineering field service for these companies carried him far and wide around the world. Prior to retirement he was a member of the Elks Lodge known as "The sons of the Beaches" in Fountain Valley, Ca. He was also an active member of the Golfari Travel League, golfing all over California. He was an avid Science fiction reader and computer "nut". He retired in 1993 and returned to Humboldt County. Jerry and his wife enjoyed golfing, beach combing and traveling in their motor home. He was an avid walker and was a familiar sight around McKinleyville walking his dogs Daisy and Sophia. The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Pacific Care for the outstanding care provided. A special thanks to Hospice of Humboldt County, who provided him with wonderful, caring respect and dignity. There will be no service at this time.
