JOANNA DORIAN MARCUZ It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the death of Joanna Dorian Marcuz on September 7, 2016 after a brief, but hard-fought, battle with cancer. She was 45 years old. Joanna was born in Sacramento, California on March 3, 1971 to John and Linda Marcuz. She was a 1989 graduate of Eureka High School, a 1994 graduate of Humboldt State University, and a 2005 graduate of Central Michigan University where she earned her Doctoral Degree in Audiology. Upon completion of her residency in Walnut Creek, Joanna returned to Humboldt County and opened her private practice, Humboldt Audiology, where she has lovingly served her patients and her community for the past 11 years. Joanna loved the beauty and history of Humboldt County and enjoyed exploring its natural wonders. She spent nearly every weekend at her beloved Redbud Ranch in Willow Creek, tending the land, puttering in her wood shop, and building a warm and welcoming retreat for her family and friends. Joanna loved to put in a hard day's work at the ranch and then walk the property at cocktail hour with a gin and tonic in hand to survey all that had been accomplished and to plan what was next. While she valued the quiet times at the ranch, she knew how to throw an epic party as well. Friends and family will long remember the birthday, anniversary, and holiday celebrations, the annual lip sync competition (during which Joanna's performances were always a highlight), and the laughter, the dancing, and the memories made. It was Joanna's fervent wish that those celebrations continue and that her family and friends continue to make wonderful memories there. Joanna is survived by her loving wife of 20 years, Emily Weber; her mother Linda Marcuz-Kehl and her step-father Rich Kehl; her sister and brother-in-law Kerry and Len Mayer; her brother John Marcuz; sister-in-law Cindy Marcuz; her father- and mother-in-law Denis and Alcira Weber; her sister- and brother-in-law Michelle and Tim McCarty; her aunt Gene McSweeney; her uncle and aunt Jerry and Mary Marcuz; her uncle Hal Hessig; her nieces and nephews Joseph and Matthew Mayer, Brice and Jack Marcuz, Kyrie and Emma Weber, and Bianca, Stella, and Evan McCarty; her cousins Shawn, Marcus, and Michael McSweeney, and Eric, Steve, and John Marcuz. Joanna is also survived by her Humboldt Audiology family William Speer, Matthew Stuart, and Rucinda Tu. Joanna was a loving and generous woman who leaves behind a lifetime's worth of cherished friends. She was preceded in death by her father John Marcuz; her grandmother Dora Marcuz; her uncles Russ McSweeney and Paul Hessig; her brother-in-law Christopher Weber, her great-aunt Tosca Monighetti, and her great-uncle Gino Casagrande. All are invited to attend a memorial mass at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Eureka on Friday, September 23rd at 10 a.m. A celebration of Joanna's life will be held immediately following at the Elk's Lodge, 445 Herrick Avenue, in Eureka. Honorary pall bearers will be John Marcuz, Len Mayer, Jerry Marcuz, Joseph Mayer, Matthew Mayer, Brice Marcuz, Jack Marcuz, Marcus McSweeney, Michael McSweeney, and Richard Kehl. In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship fund has been established in Joanna's name through the Humboldt Area Foundation. Donations in her memory may be sent to the Humboldt Area Foundation, 363 Indianola Road, Bayside, CA 95524. Joanna made the world a brighter, better, funnier, and more loving place, and we will miss her forever. Please sign the guestbook at

I'm stunned to have just discovered Joe's kind, witty, fun, and youthful energy is no more. Joe and Emily rented an apartment from me in Chico in 1998-99 while Joe was working on her doctorate and we immediately became friends. I was so impressed with their accomplishments, ambition, intelligence, independent thinking, and fun-loving natures. It breaks my heart to consider that Emily's now without her loving and loyal friend. It also breaks my heart that after working so hard to achieve so much, that she and Joe have both been robbed of so many decades to enjoy the fruits of their labor together. Emily, you have my deepest sympathy.

My wife and I were saddened to hear about Dr. Marcuz's passing. I was her patient about six years ago and although I only saw her once, I was very impressed with her kindness, wisdom, and genuine compassion. Our sincerest condolences to her family and friends. Blessings,Jennifer

My mother, Thelma Stutchman, and I, will always miss the beautiful Dr. Joanna Marcus. During my mother's first visit, it was evident that this was not only an excellent doctor who cared a great deal for her patients, but, also a very special human. She radiated kindness, warmth, and joy. She always treated my mother with respect, and each visit was a positive experience. Even though it has been three months since her untimely passing, we think fondly of Dr Joanna often, and pray for her family, and friends. Her absence has left a huge hole in this community, and, in our hearts. Rest In Peace, Lovely Lady! You made a huge contribution in this world.

Oh my gosh. I used to work with Joanna when Family Tides was the Humboldt Child Care Council. She always had a smile on her face and and the girls weekends up at Ruth Lake with all the girls from HCCC was a blast because of Joanna. I haven't seen her in years, but will always remember her big heart.
My condolences to her family.

Although it has been a couple of decades plus, my memories from HSU include Jo and her wonderful sense of humor and gentle way. I am so saddened to hear the news of Jo's untimely departure. Sending peace of mind and peace of heart to all of her loved ones during this profoundly painful time.
She really was one of the good ones.

So so sad to hear of this untimely passing. I first met Joanna at summer camp in 5th grade where she was a bright light in a very rainy week! Through high school and college she was always good for a laugh and then became the beloved doctor to my elderly grandmother. We often "saidhello" through Gram's visits to Dr. Marcuz. I know she was a bright light in her days too. Rest in Peace Joanna.

Oh my dear Emily and your family and friends,

I am so so sorry to learn of Joanna's illness and passing. While it seems we just met a few years ago they Audigy Group, I will treasure our laughter, shop talk and times together. Joanna was a very talented audiologist, whose vision, talent and wit enrich us all--whether we be patient, peer, or loved one.

Into paradise, I know the Angels have already led Joanna--and my prayer and love are with you today and through the days/daze to come. May you be comforted and find peace of heart each and every day.

You will be so missed by many dear sweet Joanna. Thank you for sharing your positive energy, wit and infectious laughter. Always good memories. I will dig out the photos from the Westwood apartment and think of you and those younger times when we were all just trying to figure it out. You grew up to be such a wonderful woman. I am so grateful I had the honor of sharing time with you in this life. Love and blessings for Emily and your entire family. May your transition to the other side be easy Joanna. I will always remember you fondly and with love. ❤

Joanna came to my high school graduation party when she was 3 months old! Three years ago, when she became my audiologist, she very professionally introduced herself. I casually said: "Oh, we've met before, Dr. Marcuz." We loved sharing stories of Dora, Tosca, Alfred and my Dad. My deepest sympathy to all of Joanna's loved ones. May she rest in peace.
