White Hat
For Laura and her daughters

The Highest Form of Wisdom is Kindness

Like Rebecca Gratz- you devoted your life to others
Your reward intangible- never for gold or blue ribbons,
even your obituary requests no flowers
but donations instead -for abused children and animals.
But I had to tell you this Lara, after I saw that photo of you-
your fine features like Rebecca's, overshadowed by a white hat
kind eyes narrowing in bright light-
that wide easy smile that claimed your face.
That I bet your two daughters still lean against you and their father.
That they have your smile.
And that I bet that your white hat hangs high on their wall.

I knew Lara from when she worked at Burlington College in the early 2000's. I so appreciated Lara's quiet and friendly manner. Her humor always put a smile on my face, and I still use a little technique Lara taught me from her days as a masseuse. I am so sorry for all of Lara's family; from Tim, whom I knew from UVM, to their two girls, her parents, and her sister.

I was blessed to know Lara years ago when she was working as a massage therapist, before she went on to become a social worker...I remember her as a gentle, caring, generous, kind and gifted practitioner and person...I wish her family much love, support and light in dealing with this terrible tragedy..

I feel compelled personally to share yet another message here and hope I don't offend anyone. I found myself truly grieving losing you on Saturday and I don't even know you. But I imagine you reading bedtime stories to your kids and loving your husband. I imagine that you had dinner night with hubby at home with hubby with the kids away for the night at a friends house. I imagine your singing while you were gardening, I imagine you rushing into the house excited with some new fresh herb that rooted. I imagine you looking out for stray cats and adopting one too many with the laughter and delight of your husband. I don't even know you. But your passing really upsets me. My husband saw me crying most of this past Saturday grieving for the loss so significant that I cannot fathom it. I am so truly grateful to you for watching out for kids. thank you Lara I don't even know you...but your passing haunts me so much I found myself in tears most of Saturday. I hope it's ok I say this. I don't want to offend or anything like that. I just know for some reason your passing has a personal affect on me that I did not expect to happen. Thank you dear lady for being there for both your kids and kids in general. I feel very touched with you...and I have no idea why. Your passing is such a heart breaking experience for me. I used to be a foster parent a long long time ago. I will remain grieving for what VT in general has lost but mostly a good soul who was a watcher and caretaker of children. Thank you ...so much for who you are and who you were. VT suffered a tremendous loss. Families in need suffered a tremendous loss. thank you ....and again I hope I don't offend by sharing this ...

I had the pleasure to supervise Lara before she started her work with DCF. I knew they were getting someone special. She listened deeply, with no judgement and loving compassion. You are missed by so many, even those who did not know you. There are no words to explain a tragedy like this. I pray that Tim, your girls and family find comfort; as well as your colleagues and friends. I hope you are dancing with the angels my friend.

Heartaches abound.....no one realizes the lives Lara impacted/saved/changed; the children who are now safe; the families that are whole again; no fan fare, no glory, quietly in the background. Definition Unsung Hero: Someone who does a great job yet receives little or no recognition for that; usually refrains from claiming too much in return for his/her efforts. That describes her perfectly.how very sad for the ones who WOULD HAVE benefited from Lara's quiet guidance.. God bless

I am heartbroken to hear about the loss of Mrs. Sobel. Just looking a the picture of her in her floppy hat and big smile, I can only imagine how kind and warm she must have been and how much she is missed tonight. I am a social worker but I am also a wife and mother; I cannot imagine what your family must be going through at this time. This will be of very little consolation now, if ever, but know that Lara's legacy will live on in the lives of the children and families that benefited from her dedication. God bless.
