Valerie Trombley Obituary

BARRE TOWN - Valerie Lea Colo Trombley, 60, was born March 17, 1949, in Barre, the only child of Lea Pacetti Colo and Rudy Colo. She died Oct. 15, 2009, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Valerie attended Ward Five School and St. Monica Grade School, and graduated from Marian High School in the class of 1967, where she was active in the drama club, appearing in several plays, and also represented the school at Girls State in 1966. She attended Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., for two years, then transferred to St. Joseph the Provider in Rutland and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1972. Valerie happily and successfully taught at St. Michael's School in Montpelier and then at St. Monica's School in Barre. On Aug. 22, 1984, she married Jay L. Trombley, another educator, and at that time inherited four wonderful children.

Jay and Valerie lived in Morrisville for a short time before moving to Barre, where they made their home. Valerie was active in Paws for Cause and the Humane Society of Central Vermont. Many of Val's happy days were spent with Fuller, her dog, and Diamond, her cat. Lots of special family gatherings were also a highlight of Val's life. Along with her special passion for being fluent in four languages, she enjoyed developing her skills in calligraphy. For the past five years Val and Jay spent their summers at their home on Gooch's Beach in Kennebunk, Maine. The atmosphere there elevated their spirits and love for each other. Val was happiest walking the beach with her dog.

Valerie is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, Jay L. Trombley; her parents, Lea and Rudy Colo of Barre; and four stepchildren, Baine and his wife Denise Trombley of Morrisville, Alison and her husband John Abry of Colchester, Ryan and his wife Steffan Trombley of Texas, and Salynn and her husband Joe of New Jersey. Val is a beloved grandmother, "Nonna," to eight grandchildren, Jazanne and Cote Trombley, Reed Abry, Paige and Kai Trombley, and Brendan, Maeve and Garret Hanlon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered in the name of Valerie Trombley to The Humane Society of Central Vermont, P.O. Box 687, Montpelier, VT 05601 (802-476-3811) or to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre VT (802-223-1878).

Funeral services will be on Monday, Oct. 19. There are no calling hours. A special Mass will be offered at St. Monica Church in Barre at 11:30 a.m. Following the Mass a gathering to celebrate Valerie's life will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Arrangements are in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer Street in Barre.

To My Dearest Papa Jay,

I am so saddened by your loss. Words cannot describe how heartbroken I was when I read Val's name. You are both so very special to me and I love you both very dearly! Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, as are your children and grandchildren. I will stop by to see you the next time I am in Vermont. I am so sorry that I did not get the chance to do so last summer. It was the first time that I didn't get up to see you and Val. I so wished I had. Please find comfort that Val is in a better place now and with her Heavenly Father. I know that she is watching over you and smiling upon you. I love you and miss you!

To Jay,
I will always remember Val in the livingroom sitting with her "Big Boy" Fuller, and Diamond, and how much she loved them. Then we would go out to your room, and try on some pretty things and we would all sit and talk.
What a lovely, caring person. She will be greatly missed by all. My heart goes out to you and your family. Denise

As difficult as it is for Jay to lose his second wife, it is excruciating for Rudy and his wife to lose their only child. When our son died someone said to us: When a ship leaves the dock and heads out to sea you can see it until it hits the horizon...but it is still there. Be there for them and each other.

Dear Jay, Rudy, Lea, Fuller and Family,

I woke with Val in my dream Thursday a.m. She and I were window shopping in Kennebunkport and she started to laugh about something I said, I started laughing too and we couldn't stop. We had tears of laughter on our faces as we continued walking down the street.
As little as I actually see all of you, know that I consider you part of my small extended family.
My prayers and love are with all of you.
