Frederick McLEOD Obituary

McLEOD, Frederick Albert We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Fred McLeod who was surrounded by the love of his family at Victoria Hospice on October 5, 2013. Fred was born in Trail, BC, July 28, 1918, but grew up in Vancouver BC. Fred leaves his wife, Kathleen (Kay) of 69 years; daughter, Karen (Rob); grandchildren, Jocelyn, Amber (Sean); son, Craig (Kate); as well as extended family and many friends worldwide. Fred flew with the RAF and RCAF in Canada and overseas as a signals officer and squadron signals leader with the Husky squadron #437 during WWII. His last official flying operation was with the Russian Air Force out of Berlin immediately following the end of WWII. After the war Fred worked and studied as an articled architectural student specializing in hospital design and in 1953 re-joined the RCAF as a Construction Engineering Officer in the Directorate of Construction Engineering Design. One of his principal roles was Project Officer for the design of the National Defense Medical Centre which he carried through to completion. He remained in close association with the Medical Centre and was appointed Senior Engineering Officer in the fall of 1960. In 1961 he accepted the hospital on behalf of the commanding officer. After retirement from the RCAF Fred returned to his old architectural firm of Thompson, Berwick and Pratt, at their invitation, and worked on the planning of the UBC Health Sciences Centre. The lure of Victoria and their seaside cottage at Mill Bay prompted Fred and his family to move to Victoria where he joined the University of Victoria, Campus Planning Department and stayed for 17 years. Kay and Fred enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling and dancing with friends at McMorran's for many years. Kay as the head Gardener kept the gardens looking beautiful at their Gordon Head home. Fred loved to play golf with many friends at the Cowichan Golf and Country Club for some years. He was also an active computer buff and Amateur Radio Operator (VE7FBW) belonging to the Victoria New Horizons Amateur Radio Club, The Short Wave Club, the Western Amateur Radio Association, and the Royal Air force Amateur Radio Society. He was also a member of the BC Maritime Museum and BC Aviation Museum as well as the Vancouver Island Air Crew Association. Another hobby of Fred's was woodworking which he did in his well equipped workshop. Fred's greatest treasures were his family. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. No service by Fred's request.

I know how very loved and cherished Fred was,and always will be, by all of his family and it was an honor to have known him for as long as I did. My dear father was truly an amazing man.All his accomplishments throughout his life are immense. His deep caring for his family, his ever lasting desire for more knowledge of things in all areas. His so genuine concern and respect for his fellow man and his deep concern of what was taking place on our planet only begin to describe my father. No matter what the situation he was always there for me.The first time I got a speeding ticket,my first divorce, illness it didn't matter dad was always there as my best friend.I will so miss his physical being but the bond we formed as we aged together will never be broken.I love you dad.
And as dad would say"carry on as if you know what your doing"

Karen... you know my heart breaks for you with the passing of your Dad.
I remember listening to a multitude of interesting stories that your Dad shared with us as young girls... I only wish I could have heard them again as an adult.
He had so many exciting adventures during his long full life here on Earth! You helped prepare him for his final journey... his welcome into Heaven. It will be the most beautiful adventure of all!
Love Rosalinda (Freds pet name for me) xo...

I was very sad to hear that Fred had passed away. My heart goes out to his family. Fred always treated me with the greatest respect even when I might not have deserved it. I remember in particular a time in my life (I was his son-in-law at the time) when things were not going so well in my life and even though I don't remember his exact words his kindness and concern cheered me up and that memory has stayed with me all these years. May you rest in peace Fred you deserve it.
