Alexander Pringle Obituary

PRINGLE, Alexander David, Q.C. August 6, 1947 - June 20, 2015 Alex approached death as he did life, with determination, courage and strength. He died at the family home in Victoria, where he was able to enjoy the last three years of his life amidst the island beauty and peace. He leaves in deep sadness, his life partner, Sheila Greckol, and their three children, Thomas, Anna and Sarah; his sister Heather and her husband Geoff; his in-laws, Lu, Mona (Stephen), Debbie (Bob), and Allison, nephews and nieces, as well as a community of friends, former students, members of the bar and bench, all of whom knew him as friend. Alex was predeceased by baby Charlotte, and adored parents, Alex and Greta. His father, who navigated a Lancaster in WWII and was a professional hockey player, instilled in him the strength of character and integrity for which he was so well known; and his literary mother, the love of learning. Alex in turn was a wise counsellor and protector to his family of which he was so proud. Alex graduated from University of Toronto Law School in 1971 and practised law until early this year. His career as a criminal lawyer based in Edmonton took him across Canada and the North. He appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on many occasions, as well as before all levels of court, Commissions of Inquiry and tribunals. His cases were many and varied, including early Charter litigation and defence of the first international corruption cases litigated in Canada, treating each case, large or small, as the most important. A lawyer's lawyer, he received awards for his service to the profession, as he exemplified the highest traditional values of the practice of law. He was known for his sage advice, capacity for deep concentration, and formidable knowledge of the criminal law. Alex' love of nature was his religion. This led him to early environmental activism as a founder of the Environmental Resource Centre and to initiating criminal process for the Fort McKay First Nation against an offending oil company. He realized his dream of having a family cabin at Lake Edith in Jasper National Park where the family spent many memorable years. With his family and friends, he enjoyed his favourite things: hockey, road trips and big cities, avant garde art and architecture, four newspapers a day, golf, smart women, and hockey. Alex was a hockey coach and mentor to many young people. He taught criminal law at the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta, for thirty years and was active in continuing legal education to lawyers and judges in many fora. An inspired teacher, he received multiple teaching awards. There are two prizes in criminal law in his name. His legacy is a law firm of vibrant, committed young lawyers, a generation of lawyers with a deep respect for the profession and rule of law, as well as the Pringle theory of criminal law, which holds that the criminal law is designed to protect the rights of everyday people who may transgress by dint of chance or circumstance and richly deserve the generous application of reasonable doubt; while still permitting of deserved consequences. Alex found good in almost everyone, believing in the power of forgiveness, redemption and the importance of second chances, though he did not suffer fools gladly. He believed there was no problem that could not be solved. Alex brought to bear his thoughtful, quiet, humble approach to helping people most days of the last forty years. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Alex' memory may do so to the Edmonton Community Foundation, Alexander Pringle QC Trust. Proceeds will be directed to IHuman Youth Society, a project for homeless youth that he supported for many years, with his deep empathy for children of First Nations descent. The family wishes to express gratitude to the health care professionals, as well as the many others who extended such kindness throughout this journey, in the community, the profession, and at court. In particular in Edmonton, we wish to thank Dr. Gordon Lees and Dr. Andrew Scarfe; and in Victoria, Hospice and Dr. David Bell. A celebration of life will be held at Robertson-Wesley United Church in Edmonton on Thursday June 25, 2015 at 1 PM.

I just heard of Alex's death. I had a career in the RCMP and both went up against Alex as well as seated next to him while he defended me! I will always remember his kindness towards me when I really needed help. He will always be a hero in my mind. I am sorry that I was unaware of his illness and was so sorry and shocked with the news of his death. I may have been the first RCMP member he defended back in 1983. My condolences to his family and please know he was a legend and the best!

I was so pleased to be present today to share in the remembrance Of Alex's Life, and to see you again Sheila. It has been years I know since Jan Reimers Alderman campaigns and of course the last time we all saw each other in 1986 during the Provincial Election while I was still on Allan Blakeneys staff. I owe Alex so much to the success and direction of my life as well as you. It was Alex who directed me to the area of Constitutional Legislative and Indigenous Law even though I did not feel it was in my abilities. You two were right as usual and led me to a path which has brought me such joy and accomplishment. Now as my body as well is failing me it was truly an inspiration hearing of the valiant fight that Alex went through and again gives me hope to keep battling! Thank you again Sheila and your wonderful family!Once again My families deepest sympathies for your loss.

We have all lost a great teacher, a mentor of integrity and a fine man. Alex taught me Crim Trial Pro,lo, these many years ago. He later cross-examined me as a witness in a drug importing case when I worked as an Immigration Officer at EIA. He was always respectful, courteous, committed, and thorough, acting with integrity to ensure the rights of his clients were respected. I have followed his career with interest since then.
My sincerest condolences to the Greckol and Pringle families as they come to terms with his absence.

It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of a man who had such a profound impact on the lives he touched. We will miss him.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family Sheila. I had the dual privilege of being taught by Alex while at the same time requiring his legal counsel as a suspect in a murder investigation in Toronto. It was back in 1990, during our criminal law class coffee break, when Alex sent a classmate to find me in HUB and advise me not to return to class, not to use my home phone, and to call him from a payphone. Campus police were shopping a photo likeness of me to classmates, who were also being asked what they knew of me.
In retrospect, I had the good fortune of becoming a criminal suspect while being taught by Alex lived criminal law like few of my classmates. However, the knowledge of my own innocence at that time did not provide me the strength to deal with the emotional responses I felt from being labeled a "suspect". It was Alex who gave me the strength at that time to keep going, and for his wisdom and kindness, I am eternally grateful.
Alex was a man of great honor and integrity a true mensch. As the website guestbook pages attests to, he will be missed by all. Sheila, my thoughts are with you. Fondly, Neil Kredentser

I am sad to learn of this loss to Alex' friends & family. I worked briefly for Alex in Jasper, AB in 1974 I believe, having also rented him a room as accommodation was always a problem. When I would get anxious around a legal deadline, he would re-assure me with "remember Pearl, nothing is life or death, unless it is"..Thank you Alex for that, I have used that quote in my work many times. Again, sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Pearl Newfeld, Victoria, BC

On behalf of the members of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, we share your sadness on the passing of as fine a person as one could ever know.
We recall Alex honing his debating skills in our chapter meetings, always ensuring that the issue was properly presented and that the views of the minority were represented. It is no surprise that Alex became a leader in the field of criminal law.
