Mary JOHNSTON Obituary

Suzanne Johnston, born Mary Suzanne Tyler, died September 15, 2020, in the palliative care unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital. She was born in Vancouver on March 20, 1943.

Predeceased by her parents Douglas and Joan Tyler, Suzanne is survived by her husband Bob, brother Peter (Berna) Tyler, sister Wendy (Steven) Kramer, step-children Michael (Caroline) and Anna Johnston, grandchildren Taylor, Haley and, Breanna, nephews and nieces Matthew Kramer, Meredith Salopek, Devon Tyler and Gradin Tyler (Karen).

Suzanne's father was in the Air Force, so she grew up in many places in Canada and Europe. She became Suzanne Hansen by marriage, kept that name when her marriage ended and she moved to Victoria in the early 1970's. Here, she had careers as a news reporter for CFAX Radio, a realtor with Highton & Associates and then ReMax Ports West, and an alderman on Victoria City Council.

In 1993 she married Bob, traded her power suits for coveralls, and started an entirely new career in Mill Bay as a commercial day lily grower and plantswoman, with the enthusiastic assistance of her several dogs. She drove pickup trucks, motorcycles and tractors for many happy years before curbing her ambitions and reducing her horizons to her gardens in Fairfield, then Central Saanich.

In the current circumstances, there will be no service. Her many family and friends are invited to consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Arthritis Society, or a charity of their choice.

Pam and i were truly saddened to learn of Suzanne's passing. i recall my first meeting with Suzanne when she was a reporter for CFAX radio. At the time i was the Chair of the Victoria Real Estate Board and had many varied and interesting discussions centered primarily around Real Estate. Subsequently suzzanne secured her Real Estate License and joined my company Highton and Associates. Many of her colleagues remember her as a very positive caring individual who gained the respect and affection of those who knew her.
It was a privilege to have known and worked with her.
Our most sincere condolences to her husband Bob and her extensive Family.

Very sad news. Suzanne was a formidable competitor on the radio news beat in Victoria back in the day. A very smart reporter, who was very kind to me - and I now regret not getting to know better. RIP

I worked with Suzanne (as a media colleague), and warmed to her immediately. She was insightful and intelligent and I was not at all surprised when she ran for City Council. She had ideals that were an attribute in her council role. She was optimistic with a great sense of humour. I last spoke with her when she lived in Mill Bay and it was clear she loved her new life and being married to Bob. My condolences to her family and friends. RIP Suzanne.

So sorry to learn of Suzanne's passing--such a fine person. Oh yes, I remember the day lilies and how much work she put into her garden at Mill Bay. We still have many of those lilies and they grace our dock at Shawnigan every summer-- they will serve as a memory for years to come of a wonderful accomplished woman. Condolences to you Bob, and to all the family.

One of the wonderful people in my life is now only a memory. Many happy memories. Meetings at the Law Society, dinners and lunches with a gracious host, enjoying her dogs as much as she did (who could forget Charlie Brown, Lucy and Jake?), talks about politics, and walks amongst the day lilies. Suzanne was one of the great people in my life and in the lives of so many- I will miss her but will be comforted by having known her. My condolences to Bob and to the many people of Victoria who will be saddened by her much too early passing.

Suz was an amazing aunt to me my whole life and I will miss her so much. I am grateful for all the fun times we shared from my childhood right up until this year. She was full of funny stories, always happy to try new things and always learning something new. She taught me many things but mostly how to organize your pantry and how important it is to be an aunt. She is a role model for how I want to with my nieces. I love you and miss you Suz!
