David BARLOW Obituary

Born Winchester, England 08 January 1931. Died peacefully at home 17 October 2018 in Victoria BC, surrounded by his family. Survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary (nee Emmerton); children Richard (Karen), Rosemary (Christopher) and Peter (Janeth); brothers Christopher and Anthony; sister Lucinda (Chubb); grandchildren Alex, Frances (Du Plessis) and Rosamund; and great grandson Charles. A resident of Victoria since 1956, David was educated at Eton and served with the Gloucesters prior to coming to Canada. He worked initially as a surveyor for Shell and other oil companies in Northern Alberta; from 1958 onwards, he served as a civil engineer for the CPR, Ministry of Public Works and latterly the Ministry of the Environment until retirement in 1996. He enjoyed hiking, sailing, music, carpentry and gardening; his retirement included a spell as a SALTS volunteer and during the last 15 years he was a familiar sight on Dallas Road, training for annual 10 km walking races, which he kept up until his last race in April this year. A long-time parishioner at Christ Church Cathedral, David was a warden there in the 1980s, a director of Cathedral Buildings for 37 years and had the honour of being the first recipient of the Order of the Diocese of British Columbia. He and Mary ran a well-known Saturday morning charity breakfast for 20 years, first at the Cathedral then from 2007 to 2015 at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

David will be remembered as a loving father and husband, faithful friend, steady colleague and source of good counsel to all who knew him. The family wishes to thank the Victoria Community Care team and especially Joan Doerksen. His funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Friday, October 26 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in David's name to Christ Church Cathedral.

We are so grateful for David's enthusiastic spark and energy. His was a bright light. Today--on the day of his funeral, the SALTS ship Pacific Grace is out sailing with a crew that is mentoring a group of 30 young people, and the ship is staying afloat because of the thousands of wooden plugs David fashioned while volunteering at SALTS. It's a tiny example of how his legacy lives on. David lit up every room he was in with his infectious energy. I smile just to think of him. We express our profound gratitude for his life and our sympathy to his family on behalf of the entire SALTS community.

It was my pleasure to have a couple of good chats with David at Your house. It was following the 'Monarchist League' Executive Meetings held at your house., while I helped with the dishes. What a thoughtful, interesting and true Gentleman he was.

I went to school with Peter and Rosemary. I remember Mr Barlow and Mrs Barlow at school events, and often saw Mr Barlow in the Oak Bay area, walking quickly to somewhere! I also remember he loved sailing. Thinking of the family at this time....peace and rest to all of you at this sad time.
