Donald ANDREWS Obituary

ANDREWS, Donald Heslop Passed away July 12, 2012, at the Victoria Hospice with Lorna, his wife of 51 years, at his side. He was born to Tom and Nan Andrews on July 31, 1925, in Armstrong, BC. Don was born to build: when given 25 cents at age 6 and asked if he would buy candy, he replied "heck no, nails". He enlisted in the BC Dragoons on his 18th birthday. Following WWII and graduation from UBC, he spent 28 happy years at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, studying the stars, and designing and building instrumentation. Don loved his family, including his big dog Jake, his home workshop, music, and reading about science and mathematics. He is survived by his wife Lorna, son Rick, daughter Susan Trice (Frank), sister-in-law Beth Bowden and many cousins. The family thanks all those who gave such compassionate care during Don's long illness, especially Dr's Kachan and Wilson, the Cancer Clinic staff, the Palliative Care Team and the Hospice staff. There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation or the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation.

Don was a real inventor, having built quite a few unique and very excellent instruments. Much of the research done at DAO during his years there rested on his inventiveness. And a very fine person he was. Thanks, Don!

Very sorry to read of Don's death. I hadn't seen him for years but remember him very well. He taught me how to use the various plate-measuring machines that he built at DAO, and we collaborated in finishing up a project begun by Bert Petrie. Sincere sympathy to Lorna and family.

He was special to all of us but he will never be truly gone as long as he is remembered in our hearts.

Big hugs to the whole family.
