F.E. BALL Obituary

BALL, F.E. (Betty) (nee BELL), aged 94, was born in Winnipeg, grew up in a log home on a homestead near Chelan, SK, was educated through Grade 11 in a one-room school, completed high school at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon (1942), and earned a BHSC (Foods and Nutrition) at University of Saskatchewan (1946). She started her career as a dietician with hospitals in London, ON, Sheffield, England and Chilliwack, B.C. She then enlisted in the RCAF and spent 21 years as an officer in the services. She retired in 1973 at the rank of Major, having served in Europe on the front lines of the Cold War and completed the unification of the separate food operations from the three services. Betty rounded out her career with appointments in Ghana, Victoria and other locations in B.C. Betty married Bob Ball in 1976 and they moved to Salt Spring Island, where they built their Mt. Belcher home and she became active in the community. Betty was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada, serving in youth leadership or congressional committees wherever she lived, and on SSI was active in building and nurturing the social systems and infrastructure that enable seniors to have a happy and healthy retirement. Betty was a life member of the Canadian Dietetic Association, earned an Award of Merit from the B.C. Dietetic Association and was awarded the Caring Canadian Award (now Sovereign Medal for Volunteerism). Betty was predeceased by: parents Peter & Della (Fallis) Bell; husband Bob (2018); sister Tanyss (2016); brother-in-law Bob (2006); and nephew Sandy (2013). She is lovingly remembered by: Brenda, David and Genny Phillips of Vancouver; Peter, Wanda, Alex and Andrew Phillips of Saskatoon; Michael, Jenny, Cristina and Sarah Ball of Victoria; and Tony and Judith Ball of England; cousins in the U.S. and Scotland; and many friends around the world. Until this past November, Betty was a 'super senior' - defying age, with an active lifestyle and mind. Betty touched everyone she met. Betty's funeral will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 23, at Salt Spring United Church, 111 Herford Ave, Ganges. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you donate to your favourite caring charity.

We have very fond memories of wee Betty and our days in Clinton, On, Borden,On and Ottawa. Although tiny, she was a tower of strength and energy and gave so much of her time and talent. As recently as December 2018 we enjoyed our telephone chats and will always recall her delightful stories about her days on the farm, her driving around in her Volkswagen Beatle and her love for her family. A GIANT among us. Bless you Betty, cheers and thanks for your special place in our lives. Doris and Jean

My memories of Betty go back to the summer of 1966 and the School of Food Services in Clinton, ON. I have always held Betty in high regard. We are both graduates of Nutana Collegiate and the U of S Home Economics College. We each enjoyed a great career in the RCAF and the Canadian Forces. The United Church of Canada is our shared spiritual community. It is with sadness that I will fondly and respectfully remember Betty. May she rest in peace with her dear Bob.

Betty and Bob introduced me to the trails and paths that they had personally cleared in many areas of Salt Spring Island, when I moved here in the mid-seventies for a brief time. We hiked for hours on several occasions and it was clear that they were passionate and very knowledgeable about all the indigenous plants and trees on the island. These trails are still used by the various hiking clubs who meet weekly!
Betty was always a bright spark in our lives and she had an extraordinary memory for most things...especially names! I don't ever recall her forgetting anyone's name, a unique feat at any age.
Both Betty and Bob were people of integrity, wit and grace.
Betty has left an incredible legacy and we will all miss her deeply.
