Harbanse Doman Obituary

DOMAN, Harbanse (Herb) Singh Herb passed away peacefully at the Cowichan District Hospital on July 25, 2007, surrounded by his loved ones. Predeceased by his father Doman Singh, his mother Purab Kaur, his brother Gurdial (Gordy) and his sister Harbans Kaur (Bonso). Herb leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years, Harjinder (Helen), daughters Darcia, Sherry, Verinda and son Jaspaul (Ricky), brother Didar (Ted), sister Mahinder Kaur, grandson Jeevan and granddaughters Natasha, Sienna and Jennece; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Following the death of his father, Herb at age 12 went to work to support his family. Starting with a dream, one small truck hauling fuel and lumber, he created a successful trucking company, building supply stores and lumber yards, going on to found Doman Industries in 1955. After taking the company public in 1964, Herb built his first sawmill in 1968 which led to the establishment of a fully integrated forest products empire of sawmills, pulp mills and logging operations. As founder, Chairman, President and CEO of Doman Industries Limited, for fifty years he provided over 5000 forestry related jobs for BC families. Herb Doman was a man of great courage, honor and integrity; he was known for his heart felt generosity and service to his community; a true pillar of the Cowichan Valley. Herb lived by his own set of values: loyalty and devotion to his family, the community and respect for his employees. They were his strength and motivation. His determination, strong business ethics and respect for his employees contributed to his success. Herb will be greatly missed by his family and remembered as a great man who was loved by all. The family would like to express a special thank you to Doctors Toyota, Gloster, Roy, Spence and Pewarchuk, all the nursing and support staff at the Cowichan District Hospital's emergency ward and 2nd floor for the special care and support given to Mr. Doman. A very special thank you to Herb's in home caregivers; Kate, Michelle, Laurie, Sheila and Linda. A Celebration of Herb's life will be held in the New Life Baptist Church, 1839 Tzouhalem Road, Duncan, BC on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Cremation at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens followed by a Service at Paldi Temple. Friends are invited to the family home following the service for a time of refreshment and reflection. What an incredibly influencial man, I met Herb only a few times, nearly 11 years ago, but through his nephew,Ranj, I was fortunate to hear loving stories about 'Uncle Herb' throuout that time. My prayers have been with him during his health struggles, and God Bless you all, his family, in your time of need, and always.

Dear Darcia and Doman Family,
We just happened to read of your father's death. We are truly sorry and wanted to offer our most sincere condolences to you and your family. Email is such a poor format for this, and normally we would send something more personal, but since we don't have your address we decided on speed over other issues.
Having gone through it ourselves we know how hard it is for all in the family. Fortunately, we also know the Doman’s are a strong clan and you will all have the much needed support. We are sorry we could not convey are condolences in person, but at the very least we wanted you to know that we care. Please let us know if there is anything we can do.
Yours very truly,
Darlene and Raul Slater

While I too did not know Mr. Doman personally, there is no question that he shaped this Province through his helm at Doman Industries. Like MacMillan, Bloedel and the like before him and like him or not, he defined BC's Forest Industry as much as any other.

I would just like to express my condolences to the Doman family on their loss.
Although I did not know Mr. Doman well, I remember him as a very kind and polite gentleman who was very well liked by all the staff at our hotel in downtown Vancouver.
Once again all my best to the Doman Family.

I am so saddened to learn of your dear husband/father's passing. From the time when I had the privilege of caring for Mr. Doman at G F Strong, I have thought of him and all of you, many, many times. A true 'gentleman' is the word I choose to describe him. He and I had many wonderful chats, as I prepared him for sleep each evening. He never complained, despite being in pain much of the time. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. All of you will remain in my thoughts.

Though I never met Mr. Doman in person, his name, as one of Vancouver Island's lumber tycoons, played an important part in my young life as a shingle weaver, working in Vancouver Island shingle mills in the 1960s. I remember when his firm went public company and many of fellow workers invested their savings in Doman Industries. Needless to say, Mr. Doman gave them a new found prosperity. Mr. Doman was a man of ideas and ingenuity, and I know for a fact he launched many other men with sound business plans on the path of success. In all the years I worked in the forest industry I never heard a negative or unkind word spoken against Mr. Doman. Everyone I knew, who knew Mr. Doman, respected and looked up to him as a fine human being and a very generous individual. With his passing this province has lost another lumber industry pioneer. I am very sad to hear of his passing, and I offer my sincere condolences to his family.
