KERMODE, Harold Douglas July 18, 1922 August 19, 2009 Harry, a true gentleman, sportsman and devoted family man passed away peacefully at home with his loving family at his side. He will be greatly missed by his dear wife of 54 years, Millie, his beloved children, Barbara (Sab), Jennifer (John), Susan (Michael). and Jeffrey (Allison), and his cherished grandchildren, Conor, Alexander, Sophie, Emma and Genna. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Garton, and brothers, Jack (Ruth) and Ernie. Harry spent his early childhood in Victoria where his enthusiasm for all outdoor pursuits began with soccer. After graduating from University Hill High School he began his Forestry Engineering degree at UBC where he played basketball for the Thunderbirds. These studies were interrupted when he joined the Canadian Air Force to train as a pilot. Upon returning to UBC, he played on the victorious Thunderbirds teams and represented Canada at the 1948 Olympics in London, England. He was later inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame for basketball. After basketball his interest turned to golf and tennis, but his greatest passion became tennis. He was a keen study of all sports and he passed on that enthusiasm and knowledge as a coach and fan to his children, grandchildren and friends. He truly believed that "Life is like a tennis game~ you can't win without serving." A Life Member of the Professional Foresters of B.C. and Professional Engineers of B.C., he enjoyed a rewarding career in the province's forest industry. Harry's entire family is grateful to the special care provided by the Vancouver Home Hospice and Vancouver Hospital Palliative Care Services. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either of these services. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Kerrisdale Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver at 2pm on Wednesday, August 26th, with a reception to follow at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club.
