Helen LANGLOIS Obituary

Our beautiful mom passed away Monday, March 29, 2021, surrounded by the love of her children.

Predeceased by her husband Howard (2002), her mother Dorothy (1995), her father Wallace Pattenden (1971). Survived by her children, Howie (Michele), Halana (Jay), Heather (Shayne), Heath (Carol); grandchildren, Kyle (Calsi), Jordan (Annie), Whitley (Ty), Sophie, Brayden (Amanda), Jacob, Brenden and Jared; 2 great-grandchildren and one the way, her sister Joanne Guest; brother Dick Pattenden (Joan) and many family & friends.

Mom was born in Barrie, Ontario. With a gentle and loving push from her mother, in 1957 (knowing no one, she barely knew our dad) she moved to Victoria to marry her "Howard" the two of them made beautiful history, happily married 44 years before dad's passing.

Before leaving Ontario, mom worked as a telephone operator at the Bell Tel Company. Once settled in Victoria she worked at BC Tel from 1957-1993, during this time she raised 4 very active children and built special lifelong friendships. Our family was raised in Esquimalt, close to Saxe Point Park, where she often retrieved one of us from some kind of mischief. Fifty years later we moved mom to the beautiful independent living community at the "Berwick Royal Oak", where she resided until her death.

Mom was the most glamorous and gracious hostess. She was a phenomenal socialite! If her house was full, she was in her element. She was always dressed for the party, whether it was a fancy sit down 6 course dinner party, a posh cocktail function or a casual 4-table euchre card party, if you were in the company of mom and dad, you wanted to be the last to leave. Mom was an incredible baker (lucky us and the Bewdley Ave kids); baking gave her so much joy. Second to baking was her love for crafts. Her creative ideas were forever flowing; one year she felt we all needed a clock based on our personalities, her funny way of pointing things out to us.

With sincere gratitude to Dr. Leah Norgrove (Fiona & Tori) a wonderful and kind medical team, Cindy at the Berwick for her extra care and support she gave mom and Kelly the Charge Nurse at RJH along with her care team for the utmost respect and gentle care of guiding our heartbroken family through this acute and difficult time.

In this undetermined world, we will wait to celebrate mom at a safer time.

Auntie Helen, was a wonderful and joyful women. Her home provided epic moments for family gatherings and just plain fun. Her passion for these times and the sense of kinship was inspirational and heartwarming. She will be greatly missed, but the memories of the great times together will live on. Our hearts are with our cousins who will feel this loss strongly in these early days, but we all can draw on the strength she fostered in us to weather this and create space for the joy she showed for the simple parts of everyday life. I will always remember the time this "stranger" was invited to her home on Bewdley for a "family" celebration. I don't remember what holiday we were celebrating. What I do remember was the LOVE she had for her family, and the fun we had that evening!!

Hugs to the family, I know she will be missed.

Dear Langlois family, the Chu family arrived in Esq in 1976 when my Dad opened up Chu's underneath the bowling alley when the new Municipal Hall resides now. The Langlois family graced us many times over the years and us kids became lasting friends. Howard and Helen were parents that ALL the kids wanted! Very very fond everlasting memories forever. The Chu and Butler Families send sincerest condolences to the whole family. We can just see Howard and Helen with Ryes in their hands and dancing together. Love from Harold and Lori (Chu/China Lily) Butler.

I’m so sorry to hear of Helen’s passing. We first met when our kids went to school together and our sons played sports. And many years later we met at floor curling. It was then we found out we were born on the same day, both in Ontario. We did a bit of travelling together, she was so much fun.
My condolences to her family.
