I only got to meet Gerry via video. I have worked with Alpha Education and more recently I have worked with Eric Brunt, who interviewed Gerry on his cross country tour in 2019. Eric shared some files with me, and my students made a video tribute. I'd be happy to share that with you - please reach out to me via my email. I know it's been a while now, but my students and i would like to pass on our condolences.

Condolences to Bev and Eric, Pat and Dave, and your families. We enjoyed our visits with Uncle Horace very much, and appreciate his time and stories shared. Such an inspiration and living example of how to just get on with life and do what needs to be done... and oh yeah, have some fun while you're at it. Another Gerrard man with that lovely twinkle in his eye.

Our condolences to Pat and Dave, and to dear friends Bev and Eric. I had the privilege of meeting Gerry on a commemorative trip to Hong Kong and Japan in 2010. Gerry was a gentleman, carrying himself tall and straight. While appearing quiet, he was not afraid to speak to strangers and had a great sense of humor. It was very memorable to be in the presence of Gerry and other veterans on this tour, and be able to hear their stories and insight into WWII. In 2015, while in Ottawa for the ceremonies remembering the end of the Asia-Pacific campaign of WWII, I was fortunate to enjoy conversation and a stroll with Gerry along the Rideau Canal one sunny afternoon. At one point, we were passed by two young ladies in attractive summer attire outpacing us. Gerry at the age of 93 with a smile and sparkling eyes, looked at me, 36 years his junior, and asked Do you mind if we pick up the pace?. Gerry, thank you for your friendship, your family, and for your service to Canada. Love Brent & Luanne, Portage la Prairie MB. We will remember them'

I am really sadden to learn about Mr. Gerry Gerrard, the last Canadian Hong
Kong Veterans in BC, who has passed away on May 22.
I had the privilege to have interviewed Gerry back in 2012 to talk about his
experience in the concentration camp after he was captured by the imperial Japanese army during the Battle of Hong Kong (1941). The interview is
available at https://youtu.be/1CmjzCMT5HE.
On behalf of B.C. ALPHA (Association for Learning & Preserving the History of WW II in Asia), may Gerry rest in peace and get the sincere apology directly from Hirohito, the war time emperor of Japan, for the atrocities committed in the name of the emperor.

Bev & Pat & families:
It is very sad to lose Uncle Gerry - he was a wonderful man. I loved his sense of humour - he was always joking and teasing. But he has earned his rest. With much love, Judy

Gerry & Ev were lifelong friends with our family brought together through promenaders square dance club. So many fond memories travelling around BC in our camping caravan, later at the promenade family picnics, the weddings of all our generation, and too many other occasions to list. May you rest in peace - Bev, Bruce and Roy

"Gerry was a wonderful man! We spent many times together while dining and visiting with Kevin and Kelly. They always sat us next to each other so we could talk the whole time. We had wonderful conversations....as we were the same age, you know.
We talked about our travels, the war, dancing, our spouses, and Gerry's golfing." Gerry could do anything!
It was always fun and wonderful to be around him. I will miss him very much!" and will think about him every time I visit our grandchildren!" Wishing you comfort and peace Gerry, missing you!"

Kathleen and I pass on our condolences to the family. We danced with Gerry for fifty years with Promenaders and Star Twirlers. We share many memories of Gerry and his wife and had many a laugh as Ev tried to share my diabetic snack on dance evenings. Another friend who will be sadly missed.

Thinking of you at this difficult time. My father Tony Grimston was a POW with Gerry. My Mum (Freda) and Dad spent many occasions with your parents at HKVA gatherings and supported each other through many challenging years living with the trauma that they experienced. Rest in Peace Gerry. We will remember them.

Gerry will be remembered and missed by all my friends, families, colleagues, and especially myself for his humour, steadfastness, and the wonderful, true and educational stories. My Fridays with Gerry and Marg was such happy times for me. As the Legionnaires say: LEST WE FORGET - I know we will never forget.
