Jill Britton Obituary

Born and educated in Montreal, Jill excelled as a mathematics instructor for over 50 years, first at Dawson College in Montreal, then at Camosun College in Victoria, retiring in 2015. One colleague described her as 'a teacher of teachers' because of her influence on both fellow instructors and on students studying to become teachers. In 2009, the Association of Canadian Community Colleges awarded her national recognition for excellence in teaching. She and her husband of 40 years, Walter Britton were great companions who travelled the world. Jill is survived by her brother Don (Pam), sisters Sandy (Allan) and Nicky (Robin), her seven nieces and nephews and many cousins. She was predeceased by husband Walter (2013), parents Frank Guadagni (1964) and Audrey Brisbane (2014) and stepfather William Brisbane (2003). In keeping with Jill's wishes, there will be no memorial service after cremation. Jill has established an education fund at Camosun College. Please direct donations to the Camosun Foundation, Jill Britton Elementary Education Mathematics Award.

Jill was the reason I was able to get through my math courses and become a teacher. She was an incredible educator and human being who wouldn't accept anything less than your best, and was always there to make sure you succeeded. Thank you Jill, you will be missed by many.

Jill was the only math teacher that I have had that made math fun and engaging for me. I have already been using her ideas in my teaching and the students love it. She will truly be missed!

She was the first teacher I had in my pursuit to an educational degree, and was by far one of my favourites. She had a passion to teach and it showed through her enthusiasm and positive outlook. She will be sorely missed :(

The best math teacher I ever had. She presented the material in a way that finally made sense. Her sense of humour and approach to teaching made math enjoyable (unheard of I know!). Countless teachers are better teachers because of having been students in her class. Her classes left me feeling inspired about teaching and helped me understand the difference a teacher can make when it comes to student success. What a loss.

As well as helping me understand and turn math from my least favourite topic to my absolute favourite topic, Jill also taught us by example how to teach with infectious enthusiasm. xx

Jill Britton is always on my mind whenever I teach math to my students. I have very fond memories being in her class and learning so much. She opened my eye to what teaching math could really be! I am constantly using things she taught me on a daily basis. Thank you for being so inspirational.

Jill was the only teacher who ever made me understand math. I always think back to her when I am explaining a lesson to students.

Jill was a friend and colleague at Camosun for many years. I had the great fortune to work with her on many projects and was so very impressed at her dedication and her passion for teaching. A sweet caring lady of whom I am proud to have known.

I am so sad to hear of Jill's passing. She was an amazing educator who allowed me to believe in my academic capabilities. She supported me through a very difficult time in school and she was such a wonderful person in general. She will be missed.

I will never forget my good friend and colleague, Jill. Aside from being an excellent teacher at Dawson College, she was the Math. Department's Social Director. Her Lasagna Parties, and many other social events will always be remembered. Jill, I hope you are reunited with Walter now and are at peace. On behalf of all your old friends at Dawson, we love you.

I can remember jill as if it was yesterday. She inspired me to aim for perfection. She made math beautiful. Logical. She was a gentle quiet presence who shared the language of math with everyone.

I had the great fortune of being taught by Jill Britton at Dawson College in the 70s, Calculus I and II. She was phenomenal, full of positive energy, and obviously loved what she did. She made me love math myself and I still tutor struggling children today because of her influence. I am so sorry to hear of her passing.

Jill was a one in a million type of teacher and human being. She made math more then just what you learn in a textbook and her wonderful sense of humour always brightened the classroom. She made math fun and attainable in a way that I had never experienced and probably never will again. Thank you Jill for seeing my potential, you will be missed.

She is a teacher that I will never forget. She took the fear out of learning math. I am very thankful that I got to be in her last class at Camosun. Thank you for your time and many many jokes. "CUT IT OUT!"

It is because of Jill that I received my first A plus . I always found mathematics so challenging but with her she really wanted you to understand and she taught me how step by step. A truly inspiring and dedicated educator.

David and I were saddened to learn about Jill's death this week. She was a wonderfully vibrant personality, dedicated teacher and enthusiastic gardener, a great reflection of Frank and Audrey.
Please accept our condolences.

I am so sad to hear of Jill's passing. She was one of the most influential teachers in my life. "Do the Math" is still one of my favourite catchphrases that I share today with my students. Thanks for the lessons Jill, both in teaching and life. You will be missed.
