Mary LEASK Obituary

LEASK, Mary Esme
Sept. 11, 1924-June 26, 2021

Predeceased by siblings Antisell, Paddy (Francis Patrick Ogilvie) and Jack (John Ogilvie). Survived by her sister Janet Ogilvie Brackenbury and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Mary was born in Bognar Regis, England to Patrick Alexander Ogilvie Leask and Lillias Esme Taaffe Gibson. She came to Canada in 1931, where she grew up at Quarry Point in Mill Bay. After obtaining her BA from University of Western Ontario, she worked from 1948-1963 with External Affairs, with postings in Ottawa, Tokyo, Bern, Bonn, Prague and, her favorite, Vienna. Mary returned to Canada in 1963, graduated UBC as a librarian in 1964, and was hired by the BC library system. She retired to Victoria in 1982

Thank you to the staff at Amica Douglas House, where she resided for 16 years, and to the staff at RJH 6S for their compassionate care during Mary's final days.

Mary will be buried at St Francis Xavier Church, Mill Bay, when family can safely travel.

Mary was my supervisor when I was hired in 1976 to work at the Cranbrook /East Kootenay branch of the Library Development Commission. She was very matter of fact , not critical and let me have quite a free rein. I had no idea of her work in the Foreign Service which must have been fascinating especially at that time. To go back to get a library degree at that age took some courage too.
