Maureen MILGRAM Obituary

MILGRAM, Maureen Forrest February 1, 1938 - March 1, 2013 A life rich with family, friends, and accomplishments. Maureen is survived by her dear husband Alan Forrest and his family, her cousins Muriel Aylen and Peter Aylen in Sidney, her "Victoria" family - Sandy, David and Calum Worthy, and by her extended British family and close friends in England. She also leaves behind her 4-legged soul-mate - "Billy Mischief." Born in London, England to Ben and Kay Milgram, the family emigrated to Canada in time for Maureen to graduate from high school and to attend the University of Toronto, where she completed her graduate degree in Leisure Service Administration. Maureen's career adventures took her to the US, Japan, China and the UK. During her Victoria years, Maureen was a Recreation Director, (Esquimalt, Saanich, Sidney and North Saanich) and Community Services Director at CFAX Radio Station. She served on the Chamber of Commerce Executive and led trade missions to both Japan and China. She was Project Director for the BC Festival of the Arts, Coordinator for Skate Canada, and was a driving force behind the Terry Fox Run and Santa's Anonymous and Four Seasons Musical Theatre. Maureen moved back to England in the late 80's to take on the role of Project Director to create the now famous, British Record Industry Trust School for Performing Arts (BRIT) with Richard Branson. During the late 90's she was the Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton upon Trent. She was Founder of the Ken Chamberlain Trust, an environmental charity, Director of the Toys on the Table Trust and Regional director of the Prince's Trust East Midlands and Founding Chair of the LeicestHERday Trust, dedicated to empowering women to take leadership roles. Maureen and Alan moved back to Canada in 2010. A whirling dervish of energy and innovative spirit, hers was a life well-lived. It is fitting that she was invited to Buckingham Palace, last year, to be presented with the prestigious Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion. Thank you to Home First and to "Beacon Angels" Cheryl and Jay for supporting Maureen during the past months following her stroke. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 11am. at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra St., Victoria.

My monthly 1980s visits to Maureen & Alan's many rented houses in Leicester (England), to attend their poetry meetings, were for me an immense pleasure and I still miss them - Maureen & Alan and their get togethers. Such lovely hosts, naturally they were both ADORED by everyone. I decided to try to get in touch and was saddened to read Maureen's obituary, heartbroken for Alan, but comforted by my knowledge gained during over fifty years spent within spiritualism. My very best wishes to Alan, assuming that he remains on earth.

Maureen I was thinking of you and felt something was wrong when I found out you had left us. The world is a quieter, less interesting place without you. You believed in yourself and those around you and never took no as an answer. Where you got your energy and belief from remains an eternal mystery! Thank you so much to a special employer, friend, and inspiration xxx

Maureen was an inspiration , a joy to be with and a wonderful challenge to your soul and mind . I learnt so much from being with her both in work and as friends . Occasionally in life you have the pleasure of meeting someone who will test your appetite to conspire with them to do good things ...Maureen was the co-conspirator with many amazing women, doing exciting and wonderful things , pushing the boundaries , challenging the status quo .... We miss her .

Cousin Maureen was such a wonderfully warm lady whom I had the pleasure of knowing and the honour of being, many years ago, one of her bridesmaids along with my sister when she married Alan in the UK. We didn't see Maureen that often but when we did she was always inspiring and fun to be around. She will be fondly remembered.

Quick sketch of her on 8th. March 2010.

As the nearest biological relative to Maureen - our Mothers were identical twins, I feel an especial loss, and I am also joined by another close cousin to her, Joy Paul,in wondering why she was taken from us so early on in her very eventful life. We used to encourage each other, each in our own spheres of activities, and I attach my quick sketch of her at the Special Day Celebration commemorating her at the Leicestherday Organisation event.
