Richard AVERY Obituary

AVERY, Richard Kenneth October 20, 1959 - November 13, 2013 Richard, 54, died suddenly and unexpectedly at home. He was born to the late Joan and Duke Avery in Victoria, B.C. where he lived most of his life. Many happy summers spent at the family cottage at Shawnigan Lake, B.C. He excelled at many sports. A knee injury cut short his basketball career at the University of Washington. The upside was he met Val, a physiotherapist, and they married in 1988. Richard became a sports agent working in hockey and went on to start his own sports agency for basketball players, developing a large network of international clients, colleagues and friends. He was passionate about making a difference in the lives of young athletes who were following their dream. In addition to his wife Val, Richard is survived by their son Sasa Devic, aunt Shirley Ellis and her children Debbie Battler (Michael), Cathy McKinstry (Ken Waet), David Ellis (Catherine), Barb Gardiner (Doug), Pat Ellis. Also, Val's brothers Mark Mahovlich (Noreen), Clarence Mahovlich (Debbie), Wally Mahovlich (Bev), and much loved nieces and nephews. Richard also leaves behind great friends, many of whom go back to his childhood. A Celebration of Life to be held Saturday December 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Uplands Golf Club, 3300 Cadboro Bay Road, Victoria, B.C. Expressions of condolence may be sent to [email protected]. In lieu of flowers Val has requested that you hug your loved ones and enjoy every moment of this life; our time here is short. Donations to the charity of your choice.

Condolences to you and your family Val. I just heard the news today. I'm so sorry for your loss. We will always cherish the memories of your visits here at the hotel, and the "talks" Richard would share with our bellman ~ sending love your way, from your "extended family" at the Hilton.
