William CHANIN Obituary

William Glenn Chanin, born Roland Manitoba July 23, 1932 passed away peacefully after a brief battle with leukemia on January 12, 2021 in Victoria surrounded by his loving wife of 57 years, Arlene and their children Laura (Rob), Mike (Fionna) and Leslie (Oliver) and Bob (Emi) in Japan.

Glen grew up in Winnipeg and graduated in 1955 with MSc from the University of Winnipeg. Following graduation he worked in Montreal for Polymer Corporation and later went to the University of Iowa and got a 2nd MSc. He returned to work in Edmonton for 1 year and then came back to Winnipeg to start work for Coca Cola.

He married Arlene in 1963 and spent 13 years in Winnipeg and then moved the family to Lethbridge and worked for Amalgamated Beverages for 3 years and then to Goodwill Bottling in Victoria for 10 years and finished his career where he started, at Coca Cola Bottling.

He retired in 1994 and enjoyed his remaining years in Victoria pursuing his hobbies such as running and painting with the Oak Bay Art Club until it's demise and the Al Frescos on Friday mornings all over Victoria and surrounding areas. He had many great friendships with artists in the Victoria area.

Glen was an avid sports lover his whole life. As a child he played hockey, baseball, track and field. As an adult he ran, and learned to ski with his kids. He loved watching all sports, live or on TV as well as all kinds of current events.

Glen and Arlene were proud grand parents to Matt, Arisa, Rachel, Austin, Renna, Amy, Leah and Josh. Glen enjoyed spending time with them and his family. Glen had many friends and was always up for a laugh and some good conversation. He loved to tease and was known for his great sense of humor and story telling. He will be missed.

Many thanks to Dr Hart, Dr Wiens and the palliative care staff at the Royal Jubilee on the 8th floor for their kindness and support during his last few weeks. In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation. Glen and his family participated in the Terry Fox Run for 40 years.

There will be no service due to covid. Glen wanted a celebration of life to be held when the restrictions are lifted.

Worked with Glen for almost 15 years at Coca Cola (Goodwill Bottling). One of the best I ever had the opportunity to work for. His concern for the office staff, warmth and humour were some of the memories I have of Glen.

Glenn was such a wonderful, gentle man. I always was so happy to see him when he came to paint with the Alfs Frescoes on Friday mornings. He will be missed by all his painting friends.

We are very sad to hear of Glen’s passing. To Arlene and the whole family, we send much love and hugs. My favourite memories of Glen all have him chuckling and sharing a laugh and a story. I always admired his artistic talent and regret that I never asked him to teach me a thing or two about painting. He was a very kind, gentle soul and will be greatly missed. ❤ Much love, Sylvia and Sheldon Rachuk and Martha Sommer

Glen was the best neighbour a person could have had! He was welcoming, kind and always helped out (plus he liked the sound of 6 beagles next door - SCORE!). Our family lived right next door and enjoyed saying hi, exchanging stories and participating in lawn wars where we tried to keep our lawn in as good of shape as Glen had his in LOL. Glen was and always will be just a really great guy! I will really miss him. Our condolences to his family!
