Grant FULLER Obituary

FULLER, Grant William It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Canadian watercolor artist and teacher Grant William Fuller, October 8th, 2016 at the age of 73. Grant passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox, early Saturday morning from complications associated with a recent cancer diagnosis. As per Grant's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service, and following cremation, his ashes will be spread in a sunny location reminiscent of his many wonderful Vancouver Island paintings. In lieu of flowers, donations on Grant's behalf, can be made to the Comox Valley Hospice Society. Grant is survived by his wife Myrna of 40 years, step-sons Harvey, Jeffrey, siblings Rosemary, Dwight (Marilyn), Neil, four grandchildren, and Susan and Cherri. He will be greatly missed by his four-legged friends Ollie, Scooter and Eddie. Arrangements entrusted to Comox Valley Funeral Home, Courtenay, 250-334-0707.

At some point in one of his recorded demonstrations, Mr. Fuller advised the artist to “wait until the effort of struggle is forgotten” before proceeding from one phase of working to the next. This strikes me as a profound insight into both art and life, and I thank him for that.

I love to watch Mr. Fuller paint watercolors. When I started trying my hand at watercolors, I watched lots of his demonstrations. They are beautiful and he is such a good teacher - he even let me send him a drawing of a cat I wanted to paint and he made a few corrections.
While watching another group of his demonstrations on Utube I found a notice of his death. I am so very sorry. I am on the US East Coast and we discussed the differences in not only how the landscape looks but in how people paint it. I will miss his kind and calm instructions and am very glad that I have his book, Watercolor from A to Z. Charleston, SC 2/02/2019

I was just looking at another of Grant's wonderful painting demonstrations on YouTube before I commenced a similar watercolour of my own. I returned to his website to get further details, and was saddened to learn of his passing; until just now I had no idea that it had happened. Having lost my wife many years ago, I can appreciate the impact of Grant's loss on his own wife and family; four-legged family members included. At 77, maybe I'm too old to be classified as a student, but I will value Grant's patience, sensitivity and sheer artistic talent for the painting time that remains to me.

I recently found Mr. Fuller's videos online, and even after just an hour or so of watching they have brought light to me while in a dark place. His videos have inspired me to pick up a paintbrush after years of wishing I had the courage to do so. They are full of such calm, peaceful appreciation for nature and beauty, and I'm sure they and his memory will be cherished for years to come!

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of this talented artist. I have begun painting again after suffering a brain injury. Instructions have been hard to follow for me. I came across Grant Fuller's YouTube instructions on watercolor painting and was so glad to have found an instructor that was easy to follow and very good at what he did. I got better and better again and get many compliments on my work now as I did before my accident. I wanted to find out more about this man and looked him up on the Internet. When I fond out he passed away last year I was/am very sad. My condolences go out to his family and friends. His work goes on teaching and I am grateful I found out about this wonderful man.

I am shocked and saddened by Grant's death. I studied with Grant at the Haliburton School of the Arts Summer Program and was inspired by his humour and kind tutelage. Having moved to BC in December, 2016, I was browsing to see what classes he might be giving here. We all have a part of him through his paintings, books and videos but I'm truly sorry for his family and friends.

I just got word of Grant's passing. When I moved to the west coast in 1987 I took some classes from Grant. Not only did I learn a lot about water color but Grant and I shared a similar past. We spent time comparing notes and coming to the realization that life is good. Real good. I am glad Grant fulfilled his artistic dreams and to this day I have yet to meet anyone comparable in terms of drawing skills. A good man and a mentor to many. He will surely be missed in the art community.
