Andrew Kayter Obituary

KAYTER, Andrew Paul July 6, 1934 - April 4, 2018 Andy Kayter of Duncan passed away at the Cowichan District Hospital on April 4, 2018 at the age of 83 years. Andrew will be lovingly remembered by his wife Carol as well as by children: Barbara Kayter (Kevin Beatty), Roberta Kayter, Andrea Kayter, Catherine Kayter; grandchildren: Robert, Kenneth (Kathleen), Hannah, Jackson, Lindsay (Ben), Alex, Emile, Andie; great-grandchildren: Mariah, Benjamin, Aedyn, Walter and Linden; sisters Rosie (Paul) Hardy, Velma Focht; brothers: Steve (Shirley) Kayter, Albert (Margaret) Kayter; sisters-in-law: Elsie Kayter, Donna (Ken) Poirier, Sheila (Robert) Hanan; brother-in-law Jim Giebelhaus (Irene) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents: Stephen and Elizabeth Kayter; brothers: John Kayter, Joseph 'Joe' Kayter; sister Agnes Talling and parents-in-law: Ed and Norma Burkmar. Andy was born on July 6, 1934 on the family farm near Leross, SK; he was the sixth of eight children. He moved to Victoria, BC when he was 21 years old. Andy started working at Al's Service Station not long after and this gave way to his career as a mechanic. Andy met Carol, the love of his life, and they married in 1958. In 1970, Andy became owner/operator of a Texaco Service Station in North Vancouver, which he successfully operated until he and Carol moved to Ladysmith, BC to manage another Texaco Station until his retirement. Andy's retirement at the age of 53 allowed for him and Carol to travel. Their hotspot was Arizona for the next 15 years. Andy was a social butterfly so spending time out in the community was always welcoming to him. He spent time in the Arizona Community volunteering with the Kiwanis, and while at home in Duncan, Andy volunteered with the Community Policing as often as he could. Andy's love for his family was strong. There was never a moment that you wouldn't find him helping someone, sharing a story or two, or on a floor playing with the grandkids. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him. The family of Andy would like to give special thanks to Dr. Ismail & Dr. Pewarchuk for your care of Andy throughout the past years, and all the staff on the second floor of Cowichan District Hospital for their kindness and caring hearts for Andy during his last days with us; our family is forever grateful. Donations in Andy's memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Cowichan Hospice Society which supports the Palliative Care Program. Condolences may be offered online at www.sandsduncan.ca.
