Mr. Elting Wilkes, 92, of Savannah, passed from this life Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Harding County Nursing Home.He was born May 24, 1910, in Florence, Ala., to Lee and Eula Sharp Wilkes. Mr. Wilkes was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 69 years, Agnes Williams Wilkes; one son, Edwin Fay Wilkes; two brothers, Chalmers Wilkes and Levi Wilkes; one sister, Lucille Whitten; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Thompson.He was retired from Union Carbide, Sheffield, Ala., and was also a retired farmer. He was a member of Hardin County Farmers Co-op.He had been an active, faithful member of Savannah Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for many years. He was well loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.Mr. Wilkes is survived by two sons, Jimmy Wilkes and wife, Rebecca, of Savannah, Joe Wilkes and wife, Dawn, of Humboldt; two daughters, Ann Jennings and husband, Dewitt, of Savannah and Patsy Thompson of Florence, Ala.; brothers, Earl Wilkes of Tuscumbia, Ala., and Rufus Wilkes of Florence, Ala.; sister, Ruby Costner of Memphis. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.The family would like to express special thanks to the caregivers at Tri-County Convalescent Center and Hardin County Nursing Home for their loving, attentive care.Visitation was Friday, Jan. 10 from 5-9 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Home, Savannah. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m. at Shackelford chapel.Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will great-grandsons.Services will be conducted by Derrell Davis of Florence, Ala., Jim Chamblee of Savannah Church of Christ, and Will Wells of First United Methodist Church, Savannah.
