Thomas Heflin Kilgoar, born on Sept. 27, 1929, departed this life on Feb. 19, 2014.

Thomas was born in Franklin County, Ala. on Sept. 27, 1929, as the only child of Thomas Britton and Eula Batchelor Kilgoar. He worked in McAfee Drug Store in Haleyville from the time he was 12 years old until he graduated from Haleyville High School in 1947.

Thomas (a service connected disabled veteran) served his country during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952 with the 107th Truck Transportation Company from Haleyville, Ala. Upon returning to Haleyville, he worked at Haleyville Textile Mills.

Thomas and Rowena were married July 25, 1953, in luka, Miss. After the birth of their first son, Michael, Thomas returned to college. He graduated from Florence State College in 1957 with a B.S. degree in chemistry. He worked the night shift at Reynolds Metals Company while attending college full time and made the Dean's List each semester.

Thomas retired from Reynolds Metals Company after 35 years of service. He volunteered at Shoals Hospital, belonged to the Muscle Shoals Optimist Club, was a member of the American Legion Post 31 for more than 44 years, and a member of Tuscumbia First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Ethel Gary Sunday School class.

The Kilgoars lived at Colbert Heights while they raised their children, but moved to Muscle Shoals in 1995.

Surviving are his wife, Rowena Lovett Kilgoar; and children, Thomas Michael Kilgoar, Mary Kay Kilgoar Wright, and Mark Wyatt Kilgoar, (Tammy); grandchildren, Jennifer Kilgoar Welch (Trey), Thomas Caleb Kilgoar, and Sarah Grace Kilgoar; as well as three special cousins, JoAnn Kilgoar Whitten, Tommie Jackson Cantrell (Brock), and Jerry Jackson (Janice).

A celebration of his life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Tuscumbia, Ala. at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. at the church.

A private graveside service will be conducted by the surviving members of the 107th Truck Transportation Company at Littleville Community Cemetery in Winston County, Ala.

What an inspiration the marriage of Thomas and my cousin Rowena has always been to me and countless other people. They have been a shining example to others. Losing Thomas leaves a terrible void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, especially the lives of Rowena, Mike, Mark, and Mary Kay. We send our deepest sympathy to you all and you will remain in our thoughts and prayers.
