Patricia Thompson Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 6, 2011.
THOMPSON, Patricia Louise, born on August 4, 1944, died on January 1, 2011. A memorial for Patricia is open to all family and friends. It will be held at Patricia's home on Thursday, January 6, 2011, from 12 to 6 p.m. In lieu of gifts, the family directs your generosity to the Patricia Thompson Tribute Fund as St. Jude Children's Hospital. Patricia was born in Racine, Wis., where she grew up with her siblings, Carol, Linda and Craig. She married and moved to Michigan and finally Virginia, where she made her home for the past 25 years. Patricia made a significant impact on her community by working for many local non-profit organizations. She received her MBA from the University of Richmond at age 55 and continued on to teach Business and Marketing courses at both The University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. Patricia's contributions will continue to benefit the lives she touched. When she wasn't shaping minds, she could be found in her garden or just sitting on the porch with a book enjoying the breeze. Patricia appreciated the simple pleasures in life. She was, and continues to be, an inspiration. She was compassionate and always had time to listen. She was a wonderful, loving woman and will be missed every day. She is survived by her mother, Lillian Thompson; her siblings, Carol, Linda and Craig; and her children, Daniel, Jennifer, Allison and Matthew. We love you, Mom. Mom,

I am so happy to say that I'm going to the Sundance Film Festival tomorrow for a film that I helped make. I felt your inspiration twice today when I was feeling nervous and unsure. It helped a lot. Also, I've only been working professionally in film for about a year and a half and I've met some great people that have given me great opportunities. At Sundance I'll see our movie and then I'll get to see other people and hopefully just get my way into some conversations. I have to get another job out of this experience. I have to get at a minimum, some positive job lead or hire. It's nerve racking though because I'm so eager and it impairs my ability to socialize, which is, as we know, not a problem for me. Anyway, I'm getting sleepy and I don't want to be sloppy when I'm writing. I love you .

Happy Thanksgiving Mom. It should be a fun day. I'm going with my new friend Merry to the Blackwood's house for dinner. Well, we just got back and it was a ton of fun. They're really generous, loving people and they treat me like their family. I'm going to call Craig right now and see how he's doing. He has a place to live right now and he also got all new teeth. It cost a pretty penny, but he has full new permanent tooth implants. He's seemingly settled and working on how to start his own company. I hope he does. I miss you everyday and I love you. I'll write around Christmas because we'll be at Jenny's house. Love you Mom.

Mom, I miss you so terribly right now. I'm doing really fun things with movies and I wish you were here so I could make you smile with good news. You are brave, smart, beautiful, helpful, caring, loving, friendly, and if I keep typing these things, I get too sad. I'm mostly writing to apologize for killing the tree that you had in your room for so long. I took such good care of it for so long and it got so full and green. I looked wonderful. But now I've killed it by letting it stay outside when it was too cold and it froze a little. I remembered it but it too late. I'm going to do everything I can to restore it. If it doesn't work, then I will miss that tree so much. It was really a part of you. You've had that tree in your room for a very long time. Not having it will be very hard for me. I'm so sorry my negligence caused the tree to die. I truly will miss it. I love you so much and I miss you.

Merry Christmas Mom. It's 1/4/13 now. I spent Christmas and New Year's with Dad. We've been having fun. But Christmas will always make me miss you more than usual. I've been working hard on my film career and it seems to be progressing well. You always taught me to be the force and set the bar. I'll be spending some time with Jen soon and then I'll visit Alli and Grady before I get back to Winston. Annie and Edward are doing great. I hope to see Dan, Mia and Jake soon. I sent Alli, Jen and Dan a leaf from the Magnolia tree for Christmas, after the fact. I have one too. Now we all have a way to have you physically with us. I love you so much Mom. Thanks for always inspiring me and supporting me. I miss you.

Hi Mom,

I got hired yesterday on my first independent feature. I was interning for free and they saw how hard I was working and hired me as a production assistant to be on set. I know you would be proud,

I love you,

Matt

My prayers and sympathy for all of Pat's family. I often think of the times we visited you in Richmond. I wish we could have been there for the memorial but your storms were too much!

I am so sorry I missed the memorial for your mom. I wanted to tell you what a great friend your mom was to me, and also how proud she was of all of you! She bragged about you all the time and mentioned, numerous times ( read, constantly), how lucky she felt that her kids were just such "neat, funny" people. I will miss her greatly as I know you will. Just yesterday I was thinking about Professor Thompson's class and the marketing principals she taught. She was one of my favorite teachers. My condolences to her family. "Weeping may endure for the night, but joy will come in the morning." D.R.Newman UR SCS'08
