1920 - 2010

Genevieve M. Gibbons passed away at home June 5 after a long illness.

Born in Honolulu in 1920, she received a degree in nursing from St. Mary's College of Nursing in San Francisco in 1941. She met the love of her life, R. Matthew Gibbons, M.D., in San Francisco. The couple wed in 1944 and raised their children in Vallejo.

A two-time cancer survivor, she was an active volunteer for the . She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and was an avid golfer and charter member of Green Valley Country Club.

In 1999, she had the honor of christening the vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca of the Military Sealift Command fleet, named in honor of her brother, Leroy, who was killed in the Korean War and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, R. Matthew Gibbons, M.D.; brothers, Leroy, Earl and Valentine Mendonca; and a sister, Adele Bachman.

She is survived by a sister, Lucille Mendonca of Honolulu; four children, Ross (Raya) of Vallejo, Leilani (Tommy Elledge) of Lincoln, Calif., Adele (Art Spacher) of Linn Creek, Mo., and Lisa (Curt Carlson) of Oakland; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, in particular Katherine Mall, who was her caregiver in her last years.

Visitaion will be from 5 to 9 p.m. with Vigil services at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Twin Chapels Mortuary. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Basil the Great Catholic Church followed by burial at All Souls Cemetery, Vallejo.
