Beverly J. Richards Longo, 78, of Kingston, passed away peacefully on Jan. 13, 2013 at the Celtic Healthcare Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her loving family. Our Lord reached down to Beverly to welcome her into Heaven on the blessed day of the Baptism of our Lord.
Born in Kingston on Aug. 24, 1934 she was the daughter of the late David and Susan Shiner Richards. Beverly was a graduate of Kingston High School, Class of 1952, where she remained an active member of the reunion committee. During her high school years, she shared her gift of music by playing clarinet in marching band, stage band and concert band. She was also a graduate of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing and held various professional positions throughout her 47-year career. Those positions included night supervisor, head of nursing and staff, public health nursing, home health nursing as well as private duty, and she was certified in school nursing. Beverly also graduated from Misericordia University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in Nursing Education.
She enjoyed her nursing career tremendously as well as all the people she met along the way, colleagues, patients and their families; she was truly an Angel of Mercy.
Beverly especially enjoyed spending time with her two daughters baking, cooking, vacationing, celebrating the holidays and spending time with them as much as possible. A member of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, Kingston, she attended as many church functions as possible.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Longo, 2007, and by her sister Theresa M. Decker, 1985.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan A. Longo; Sandra M. Longo and fiancé Kevin J. Dougherty; sisters LaMere Fiorini and her husband, Eugene; Donna Fisher; aunt, Betty Shiner Fahad Gazire; many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, extended family members and dear, dear friends.
She always cherished her family and friends and enjoyed their company. She received the greatest satisfaction in serving those who sat around her kitchen table. Beverly humbly turned her house into a home in order to celebrate the beautiful gift of family and friends and for all to enjoy.
The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from Maher-Collins Funeral Home, 360 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., Jan. 17, 2013, the feast day of St. Anthony, Beverly's patron saint.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.maher-collins.com.
