Paul "Buddy" O'Malia, 75, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's.
In his early years, Budd could be found working at the family business, the O'Malia Laundry, until he graduated from Kingston High School in 1963. He went on to receive a degree from King's College and began his career as a teacher of French at Freeland (Hazleton Area) High School and while there, traveled to France with many of his students.
He left the teaching profession to assist with the family business, Piledggi's Restaurant, where he spent the next 13 years entertaining thousands as they came to this valley landmark. After retiring from the restaurant, he went on to be the Executive Director of the Luzerne/Schuylkill County Workforce Investment Board. Last but not least, he worked for the Luzerne County Intermediate Unit, where he taught and mentored young adults on bettering their life skills. While working here, Budd developed the Straight Up Drug Program, which impacted the lives of many young adults in the community.
Budd was a member of the Rotary Club of Plymouth, where he had 41 years of perfect attendance. He was fortunate to receive multiple Paul Harris fellows, the District 7410 distinguished service award and Rotarian of the Year. He went on to become District Governor of Rotary District 7410 in 2013. Rotary is where he began his love of volunteering and of giving back to so many. One of his favorite programs which he initiated was the "Kids @ Kristmas" program where every year more than 125 low-income children were able to purchase gifts for themselves and their family members. Without this program, many children would not have had any gifts under the tree.
He loved to help others as evidenced by the fact he received the Catherine McCauley House volunteer of the year award in 2018. You could always find him delivering food to the needy or just lending a hand at various community projects throughout the Wyoming Valley.
Budd loved telling his jokes and when it came to giving a speech for a wedding toast, a church eulogy or being the emcee at an event, nobody did it better than he. He also enjoyed the world of sports and was fortunate enough to make various trips to the Super Bowl and two trips to the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin (Bud) O'Malia and Ann Krivenko O'Malia; in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Piledggi; and brothers Thomas O'Malia and Patrick O'Malia.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Carol Piledggi O'Malia; son Jeffrey O'Malia and companion Pam Carpenter; daughter Lori O'Malia Johnston and husband Jim Johnston; granddaughter Madeline Johnston; grandsons Ryan and Jimmy Johnston; brother Edwin (Ned) O'Malia; sister Mary O'Malia and her husband, David Perdzock; brother Mark O'Malia and his wife, Patti; sister Ann (O'Malia) Fitzsimmons and her husband, Brian; two goddaughters, Abbie and Hannah Aughenbaugh; "adopted" son John Karavis, his wife, Shelly, and their son, Sammy; lifelong friend of 70 years George "Bobby Day" Miscavage; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Allied Services, Home Instead and The Gardens at East Mountain for all their support and care over the past few months.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rotary Club of Plymouth in c/o Shelly Karavis, 111 Maplewood Ave., Dallas PA 18612. These donations will assist with funding for the annual Budd O'Malia golf tournament to be held in Budd's honor and the fight to end Alzheimer's, The Kids @ Kristmas Fund.
Friends may call Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerbey Ave., Kingston, for a walk-through viewing. Private funeral Mass and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

I just found out you passed away. As soon as I heard those words, the world went silent. You were there for so many major life events. You helped me write my first resume, you were there when I got my driver's license, there when I graduated, there to dance at my wedding and ever special moment in between. You were more than a teacher/mentor. You were a second father to me. Over these past 10 years, I would always call you with new community service projects that I was doing. You instilled why doing such things was so important in life. I have carried that with me and walked the path you showed me. I'm so thankful that I saved your last voice-mail to my phone, "Crystal Blue Persuasion, I'm proud of you" the last words I will ever hear you say. This world will be a bit darker because you are not in it. My world will never be the same with you gone. I will miss you dearly, and I promise I will continue my life of service in your honor! Until we meet again Buddy....

Mr.O'Malia was my mentor and friend. As a student at G.A.R. I looked forward to seeing Mr.O'Malia because he not only was full of life but taught me about how to live life to the fullest.I credit him for many positive decisions I made in my life as he showed us all that we have options which many were unaware. He was my absolute favorite teacher and will always be remembered. He always said that if what he did could change the life of "just one" then it was worth it.Well,I was that one, Mr. O' Malia, you definitely did change my life but many many others.Until we meet again. My condolences to your family especially your beloved wife who I had the honor of meeting at the library a few years ago.I thank you for everything you did and pray that God blesses you forevermore.

He was the most amazing person he also taught JPG JOBS FOR PA GRADS AT GAR memorial high school in wilkes barre for many years and touched ssd o many young lives. Mine and my children's included in massive ways the world isn't ready for. He actually showed love to those who needed and would do anything for anyone. I had a great pleasure of being his friend and the love he showed was genuine and real. My children look up to him as a great man in their lives. Abe's hotdogs and chocolate milk were our favorites at lunch time to share. Our great trips to New York city and McDonalds burgers and fries were a great treat. I love you mr omalia I am missing u greatly thank you for always having an ear to listen and giant heart that cares

My heart is saddened today hearing of the loss of my friend and previous co-worker. He was one in a million. He had a quote that he said everytime he finished a speech.."keep reaching for the stars." "Mr. O" (as we called him) was the coach of the Freeland High bowling league, and as the secretary of the league for 3 years I had a lovely working relationship with him, decades ago. He was also my teacher for French 2. I have many fond memories of him. All of his family should know that he was a wonderful teacher and mentor. My thoughts are with you.

To: Carol, Lori, Jeffrey, and Budd's brothers and sisters, and George Miscavage. My condolences to you all. To know Budd was an outstanding pleasure in my life. We spent many happy hours together at Piledggi's.
Due to my health problems I will be unable to endure standing in line with hundreds whom I am sure will show their respects, so I do mine here and now. I remember Budd living on Bowman Street in Kingston. That is a long way back. He was a gentleman's gentleman, and touched the heart and soul of everyone that got to know him. May you rest in peace and enjoy the afterlife my friend.

Buddy was a dear friend to our Head Start Children and Staff for over 20 years. Without Plymouth Rotary sponsoring our Head Start Children at Edwardsville and New Street Center for Kids for Christmas, our children would not have many gifts under the tree.
Buddy came to Edwardsville Center to come and read to our children for many years!!!
Buddy won the Outstanding Community Award at Head Start for all his hard work through the Plymouth Rotary.
My heart is broken about the passing of our dearest friend Buddy.
I also want to share my deepest sympathy to Carol and her family as well.
Until we meet again Buddy, Love Joanne
