Mary V. Maravich
Aliquippa
Mary V. Maravich, 97, of Aliquippa, passed away peacefully Monday, February 17, 2020, surrounded by her loving daughters and immediate family.
Mary (nee Vidovich) Maravich was born August 20, 1922, in Aliquippa, Pa. The daughter of the late Steve "Stevo" and Stella Vidovich, Mary was also the loving wife of the late Lawrence "Lazo" M. Maravich, who passed away January 15, 2008, and the most committed, wonderful, loving mother to two daughters, Jeanine (with whom Mary resided), in Aliquippa, and Laurene, in Sewickley.
Mary was also a sister to two dear brothers, Milan "Milo" and Nick 'Ninny" Vidovich, and sister-in-law to Josephine Vidovich, all of whom preceded her in death.
Nieces, nephews and godchildren also survive Mary, especially Nick Vidovich Jr., Joyce Maravich Scursatone (Mary's "third daughter"), Carole Maravich, and Kumovi Larry Rebich, John Rebich (deceased) and Cissy Rebich.
Mary was a graduate of Aliquippa High School, Class of 1941, where she was known as "dark haired, dark-eyed Viddy. " Following her graduation from school, she worked firstly as a cashier at the HiLo Grocery Store in Logstown and later downtown Aliquippa, followed by work as a stenographer at The Navy Yards in Leetsdale, and subsequently a stenographer and office accountant at Kidd Drawn Steel Company, in the1950's. With her acumen for numbers and accounting, Mary could easily have worked for The Federal Reserve.
Most innate and important to Mary was caring for her family. An accomplished cook and baker, she also loved to read, and loved creating and decorating a beautiful home. She had a class and elegance about her which she came by naturally, and which was evident in her appearance and in the way she dressed. Though she came from the humblest of beginnings, she always had an eye for things of finer quality. This said, she was none-the-less, an extremely hard worker all her life. She never tired nor shied away from challenges and often times, extreme difficulties. Even in sickness, she always rallied and defied the odds of 'pulling through'.....until now. Rather quiet by nature, she felt most comfortable being in the background, never the forefront. Despite her rather reserved demeanor, she had a wonderful sense of humor, a dry wit, and loved to laugh. And she loved Coca Cola.
A devout Serbian Orthodox Christian all her life, Mary was a lifelong member of her beloved St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church in Aliquippa; a member of the King Alexander Lodge #23, and a member of the Serb National Federation (SNF). Mary and her husband Lazo so loved God, their Orthodox faith, their Serbian culture, customs and traditions, and maintained these devotions to their last days.
Mary was the epitome of a fearless, selfless, loving and dedicated wife and mother who "never stopped doing" for her husband and daughters. She was tremendously devoted to them, and never stopped caring for and protecting them until her last breath. A beacon of kindness, compassion, strength and beauty, Mary will be missed by so many, but most profoundly by her two daughters.
