My sincere sympathy to the family of Duane. I was an Ohio University associate and could always count on Duane to help out upon being called and for his humor. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. - Connie Garrett, former OU Human Resources

I walked at the Athens Community Rec Center early in the morning like Duane did and talked to him from time to time. He walked faster so if we both started at the same time we would talk until he warmed up and walked ahead of me. He was such a nice man and spoke of his family and especially the grandchildren. Thank you for sharing your husband, father and grandfather. He was always so nice and friendly. I pray you can find strength to get through this and continue with the life he would want you to have. Bless you

My family's thoughts go out to the entire Starkey family. I was fortunate enough to work for Duane and his team as a student. He treated me as a staff member and not just a student. I recall his 'voice of reason' and being the only Athenian I knew with northern Ohio connections. He will always be remembered.

Our heartfelt sympathies to all of Duane’s family. We are much saddened by his passing—he was always helpful and supportive to us in our respective needs as computer technology “pioneers” at Ohio U. His quiet professionalism and willingness to talk through projects and problems was a wonderful resource to us, and to many others. May his love of gardening and the natural world be a lasting legacy, and may all the good memories comfort your hearts.

Mary Jo, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I knew Duane from working in IT at Ohio University. I didn't know him well or work closely with him but he was always kind and friendly when our paths crossed. When you were Izzy's teacher last year I didn't make the connection between you and Duane. I lost my husband just last month so I know somewhat of what you're going through. I pray that you find peace and have all of the support that you need.

I'm am at a loss for words. I have known Duane since the early 80s when I was still in high school and frequenting the computer lab in Alden Library. In the mid-90s, we became neighbors and friends. One could not ask for a better neighbor or friend. He was also willing to lend a helping hand, a kind word when I was in distress, and often helped take care of my pets when I was out of town.

To Mary Jo, Michael, Matthew, David, and Megan: I can't imagine the loss you are dealing with. My parents and I can only offer our condolences for your loss. We will miss him so much.
