Luis Monguio Obituary

CLIFTON PARK Luis Monguio of Berkshire Drive, died at his residence in Clifton Park on Sunday, July 10, 2005. Born in 1908 in Tarragona, Spain of a prominent Catalonian military family, he was groomed for the diplomatic service from an early age. He earned a law degree and served in many posts in the diplomatic corps including Gibraltar, Morocco and Valparaiso Chile until the Franco dictatorship took control of Spain. He emigrated to the United States during this conflict, where shortly after, he joined the U.S. Army and fought during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he settled in California where he taught at Mill's College and the University of California at Berkley where he was chairman of the Romance Language Department. Following his retirement from the University of California at Berkeley, he was a visiting professor at SUNY Albany. He is survived by his devoted wife, Alicia Colombi Monguio of Clifton Park; beloved friends and students, Jack Ishman, Esther Murillo, Valerie Sleight, Monserrat Mochon, Luzmila Camacho, Daniel Eisenberg, Ellen Burns, Teresa Carranza and Roberto Gomez. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 12:00 noon at Corpus Christi Church in Ushers, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Church Building Fund, PO Box 628, Round Lake, NY 12151 in memory of Luis Monguio. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9, Clifton Park, NY 12065, (518) 371-5454.
