Ziamandanis, John James ALBANY John James Ziamandanis, age 82, of Albany passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013, peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Born in Albany on March 13, 1931, he was the son of the late James and Sultana Mangos Ziamandanis. On June 22, 1952, John married his childhood sweetheart, Matina Giftos. He was raised and educated in Albany and was a graduate of Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy, class of 1950. After earning All City and All Capitaland Honors, John earned a full football scholarship to George Washington University and then continued his education at Hunter and Columbia Universities. John earned his master's degree from SUNY Albany in education. John was employed as the athletic director for Linton High School in Schenectady retiring as department chairman in 1991. One of his proudest achievements as athletic director was being most instrumental in the forming of The Big 10 Athletic Conference. John proudly served in the United States Naval Reserves, retiring as commander after 36 years. He and his wife were members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Schenectady and St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Albany for many years. He was also a member of AHEPA, The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, The American Legion and was actively involved with several Republican political committees in Schenectady. John enjoyed golf and wintering in Cocoa Beach, Fla. with his wife. Beloved husband of 61 years to "the love of his life" Matina Giftos Ziamandanis; loving father of James J. Ziamandanis (Dana) of Colonie, Peter Ziamandanis (Maria) of Loudonville and Niki Bladel (Robert) of Ashburn, Va.; brother of Helen Papazissis (the late Gus Papazissis) of Boston, Virginia Cholakis (the late John Cholakis) of Albany and Gus Ziamandanis (Victoria) of Albany. John is also survived by his seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. John's family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the compassionate care that has been given to John by Karen and Dave Cleary. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013 at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road, Albany. The family will receive visitors 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tebbutt Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany with Trisagion Service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
