June O'Connor Obituary

O'Connor, June A. COHOES June A. Seyboth O'Connor, daughter of the late Quentin and Frances Walniakowski Seyboth, most recently of Cohoes, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2012. She was born on February 17, 1943 in Albany and was a life-long resident of the Albany area. June attended Bethlehem Central schools and SUNY Albany. She taught Spanish at Albany High School before having children. June was a longtime volunteer and then employee of Literacy Volunteers (now Literacy New York) where she developed and conducted workshops for tutors and was a tutor herself for a great many appreciative students from all over the globe. She is survived by her oldest son, Daniel O'Connor and wife Darcy of Denver; son, Thomas and wife Rebecca and their children, Hannah and Luke of Rochester; sister, Nancy and husband Bill of High Falls; brother, Jack and wife Rory of Myrtle Beach, N.C., and many nieces and nephews. A late convert to world travel, June made several memorable trips to London where she toasted New Year's at Big Ben and sipped tea in ancient inns, strolled the streets and parks of Paris, swirled her toes in the Caribbean and completed her dream trip to Poland in the summer of 2011. June was quietly and cheerfully perseverant in her work and enormously dedicated to her students. She was a wonderful friend and mother, and a superb grandmother. Funeral from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ltd., 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes, Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Michael's Church, Cohoes at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Those wishing to remember her are encouraged to make a donation in her memory to Literacy New York (1450 Western Ave., Albany, NY, 12203).

Thank you for the opportunity to remember June. This is a wonderful idea to review and repeat all that was said at the time of her death.
June trained me as a Literacy Volunteer. I enjoyed the training so much. June was always calm and encouraging. She helped so many people.

June trained me to be a Literacy Tutor. I can't say enough good things about her generosity and kindness. She has impacted thousands of lives helping so many to improve their English skills and thus, improve their futures. My student and I grieve the loss of her as a mentor and friend. We're praying for her soul and for comfort for her family.

My deepest sympathy goes out to June's family at this sorrowful time. I trained and then worked with June for the last seven years and it was always such a pleasure. In recent years, we traded off teaching classes at the Chinese Community center and she was always so supportive, cheerful, enthusiastic and calm about whatever came our way. She will be greatly missed as a teacher and friend.

My deepest sympathy to all of June's family. My earliest childhood memories are of her, Nancy and I "playing house and dolls" at her house on Plymouth Ave. And oh the delicious desserts her mom would make and let us taste! I have just the fondest memories of way back when!

So sorry to hear this sad news. As a Literacy Volunteer tutor, I understand what a great loss this is to the students and tutors she advised. June was wisdom personified.

We have such great memories of Grandma June. She was an expert game player and a wonderful woman to talk to about anything. She was always willing to jump in and be a good sport, even if it was something new. She was a great listener and our family will miss her.

My student and I last spoke to June on March 15. She was busy at her desk correlating test results when we arrived, but not too busy to join us in interpreting a poem! To me, June was the face of Literacy Volunteers--always helpful, caring and gracious.

Thanks mostly to June I have enjoyed many years now as a Literacy Volunteer. She was a great support for me and for my students, especially at the annual testing time. She always made them feel comfortable, respected, and encouraged. She will be greatly missed.

I tutored for a few years, and it went so well because June helped me and my classmates to understand our role as tutors, the challenges we would face, and to understand the diverse cultures we would encounter. I remember bringing my student for annual testing for the last time, and June said, I'm sorry to say but your student is now doing too well for our program! All because June herself was such a good teacher. Thank you, June. My prayers and sympathies are with June's family.

June was a super-achiever and one classy lady. As a tutor for six years I always welcomed her easy manner and conversation. Her dedication to all the students and tutors was amazing. Her ability to match students and tutors was always on target. Whenever she presented me with a new student I could never say no. I was trapped by her interest, compassion and love of the English language. June was an institution of learning all by herself. !Adios!

June was a good friend and inspirational coworker. Her enthusiasm for, and years of dedication to, the ESL students in the Capital Region were truly remarkable. We shared many good times planning, training and even reporting program activities. I loved hearing her stories about spending time with Nancy and Marge and Jack. She often told stories about Daniel and Thomas when they were growing up or about visiting with them and their families (especially Hannah and Luke, "The Littles"). I feel like I know you all. We had big fun going to NYC together - riding the trains, eating Polish food and wandering Central Park - with "Antsy" one Saturday many years ago. We often celebrated our birthdays together too. She was well-loved and loved us all as well. June will be sadly missed.

I worked with June at the Schenectady Library for Literacy NY Greater Capital Region. She loved the work she did to help others learn and was dedicated to teaching. She was proud of her sons and spoke often of them and visiting her grandchildren in Rochester. I hope the wonderful memories of your mother, grandmother, sister and cousin help to console you during this difficult time.

Droga June;

Will miss you so much on Tuesdays. Your presence at class was always a delight. Spanish & Polish often got mixed-up; but always with humor.
