Smith, Dr. Margery W. EAST BERNE Margery S. Garry, 86, died on August 8, 2012 at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin, N.Y. She was born on January 23, 1926, the daughter of Franklyn and Margery Weyrauch Smith in Port Washing ton, N.Y. She was predecea sed by her husband of over 50 years, Harry Garry; her son, David Michael Garry; and her sister, Mary Jane Smith. She is the beloved mother of Charles J. Garry (Anina Lacour, DVM), Franklyn B. Garry, DVM (Ragan Adams, DVM), Johanna M. Halsey, MM, MA, (Mark, Phd.) and the Hon. Elizabeth A. Garry (Betsy Cahill). She is the loving grandmother of Justin and Trevor Halsey, Sam Garry, Bonnie and Jacob von Mechow and Nathaniel Garry. Dr. Smith graduated from Syracuse University College of Medicine in 1950. She met her beloved husband Harry while completing her medical residency in Albany. She then moved to the dairy farm in the Helderbergs where she served the medical needs of her community while raising her family. Dr. Smith over her distinguished 50 year career participated in numerous professional and community organizations, including serving as president of the NYS Academy of Family Physicians in 1984 and the American Medical Society of the County of Albany in 1980-1982. In 1979 she was a runner up for Good Housekeeping Family Doctor of the Year. Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont, N.Y. A memorial service will be held at the Helderberg Evangelical Church, Berne, N.Y. on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her memory to: Foundation for Upstate, 750 East Adams St., CAB 326, Syracuse, NY 13210, to be used toward the scholarship fund which she established for an aspiring family doctor.
